Wandering Aengus

Hello everyone,

Another lover of early music and classical music here.  I've loved classical music since I was a child, but have only gotten into early music since 2012.  I'm not even sure what (finally) led me to investigate early music.

Some favourite composers: Machaut, Dunstable, Dufay, Ockghem, Josquin, Tallis, Palestrina, Lassus, Dowland, Biber, Purcell, Bach, Fauré, Debussy, Stravinsky, Vaughan Williams, Finzi, Cage, Feldman, Ligeti, Takemitsu, Pärt.  And plenty more!  I'm not dogmatic about it, but I do have a preference for HIP, at least for music 1750 and earlier.  Of all music, I adore Bach's Cello Suites the most (closely followed by the Violin Sonatas & Partitas) - but don't ask me which recording-- I'm torm between Jaap Ter Linden's 2006 recording (on Brilliant Classics), Queyras, and Bylsma -- at least that's my opinion for today! lol

Outside of classical, I also enjoy a lot of English folk and folk-rock (mostly of the 60s and 70s): Shirley Collins, Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy, Sandy Denny... and some odd assortment of rock: Velvet Underground, Neu!, Joy Division, and an odd assortment of post-rock, ambient, and the more experimental side of electronica (like Richard Chartier, if that name means anything to anyone here) -- I'm fairly broad in my listening habits, but early music and classical music I love the most deeply and most often.

I'm also into a great deal of literature, mostly poetry, which is a kind of music too, in its own special way (Vergil, Dante, Whitman, Yeats, and Eliot are central to my personal sacred canon) -- and a good deal of philosophy as well.  I'm a bit of a bookworm and probably can't live without poetry any more than I could classical music.

I suppose the main reason I'm here is to simply explore the opinions of others and pick up new listening tips (composers and recordings).  Not sure how often I will frequent the forum -- I may lurk, I may be chatty, who knows?

Cheers,
Wandering Aengus

Welcome, Wandering Aengus - and you have an intriguing list of favorite composers. And what's not to like about Bach's Cello Suites? Nice to see a kind word for poetry, too.

I thought we stopped the Delius-shaming.
