Archaic Torso of Apollo

Inspired by a recent listening session, where I went thru all the 4tets and some other stuff.

String Quartet #1
Piano Concerto (the big one)
Symphonia
Boston Concerto
Variations for Orchestra

I have to stop at 5, because if I did 6, there would be too many candidates for the 6th slot.
formerly VELIMIR (before that, Spitvalve)

"Who knows not strict counterpoint, lives and dies an ignoramus" - CPE Bach

ComposerOfAvantGarde

Oh gosh there are so many excellent pieces.........so many fantastic shorter works in the more recent years as well! I will have a go and list 5 favourites off the top of my head though...........

A Mirror on which to Dwell
Luimen
Cello Concerto
Asko Concerto
Symphonia

Ain't it the truth. I was listening to Catenaires recently and thinking it sounded like a lost Ligeti etude.

Yeah! I was so surprised hearing that piece in particular....in some ways it seems very uncharacteristic rhythmically, but hearing its melodic content above all makes it very 'Carterian' in sound.

springrite

This is hard! Now, let me give it a try:

Triple Duo
Night Fantasy
Symphonia
Oboe Concerto
Quartet #1

This one is so short, I should be allowed to sneak it in as well:
Esprit Rude/Esprit Doux
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

amw

Piano Concerto
Dialogues
Variations for Orchestra
String Quartet #1
Night Fantasies

Special shoutout to the Piano Sonata even though it's basically not ~Carter~

That's a list I can get behind too. It was a toss-up between Night Fantasies and the Boston Concerto. I went with the latter just cuz I listen to it more often.

My two cents worth:

- A Symphony of three orchestras
- Oboe concerto
- Violin concerto
- Syringa
- Cello sonata

nathanb

Definitely including:

A Symphony Of Three Orchestras
Symphonia
Night Fantasies
Double Concerto

Round off the top 5 with a string quartet or What Next?, most likely.

Gaspard de la nuit

String Quartet No. 1
Variations for Orchestra
Duo for Violin & Piano
Symphonia, 'Sum fluxae pretium spei'
Eight Pieces for Four Timpani
