As 2015 prepares to slink its way off the world stage, it's time to look ahead to the significant anniversaries we have to look forward to in 2016. Quite often these are a good way to re-evaluate a composer's output and their place in the history of music, so it is very much worth pointing them out and acknowledging these moments.

Starting with composers, 2016 will mark:

- 100 years since the birth of Henri Dutilleux, Alberto Ginastera and Milton Babbitt
- 100 years since the death of Max Reger and George Butterworth
- 150 years since the birth of Erik Satie and Ferruccio Busoni

...to name just a few of the more well-known examples.

Also, several notable works were completed and/or premiered in 1916, including Nielsen's "Inextinguishable" 4th Symphony, Szymanowski's 3rd Symphony, and Hubert Parry's setting of Jerusalem.

Not much happening this next year...  :-\

The year 1816 is a nearly useless year in music history - death of Paisiello, no famous births at all, the premiere performance of The Barber of Seville, Schubert Symphonies 4 & 5.

Even Beethoven produced only two important works that year:
Opus 98: An die ferne Geliebte, song cycle (1816)
Opus 101: Piano Sonata No. 28 in A major (1816)

The new erato

125 years (not a significant anniversary though) for Prokofiev.

Still noteworthy though. Thanks for the heads-up.

It's also 10 years since the deaths of Sir Malcolm Arnold and György Ligeti.

I can't wait to see what special Babbitt editions will be released next year....I'm guessing Ginastera has more chance though! I  love them equally as composers.

Completed in 1916, but not premiered until 1921, and then without the solo voice and choir. First full presentation was in 1928.

Max Reger had already been mentioned in the initial post. ;)

Memorable quote from Max Reger, from a letter to a music critic:
QuoteI am sitting in the smallest room in my house. I have your review in front of me. In a moment it will be behind me!

Several 20th century British composers died in even-numbered anniversary years:

Sir Granville Bantock, 1946 (70 years ago)
Gerald Finzi, 1956 (60 years ago)
Benjamin Britten, 1976 (40 years ago)
Edmund Rubbra, 1986 (30 years ago)
Sir Malcolm Arnold, 2006 (10 years ago)

Also, Havergal Brian was born in 1876, 140 years ago.

1936 was a pretty good year for significant composers. Those born in that year (most are still with us) include

Cornelius Cardew
John White
John Tilbury (more pianist than composer)
Steve Reich
Harold Budd
Ladislav Kupkovic
Gilbert Amy

also (perhaps less significant, though certainly of interest)
David Blake
Erich Urbanner
Daniel Goode

There are dozens more, of course . . .

2016 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Bruce Steane (1866-1938).
