He was involved in the avant grade third stream jazz movement, which is where I was first aware of him. The John Lewis album "Jazz Abstractions." Then, I got him conducting Ives Short Pieces in an LP called "Calcium Light Night" on Columbia Masterworks, available now on CD. He is a good conductor and arranger, and...composer, of course.
I just listened to his Symphony 1965: very sparse and Webernish. I have other works of his; the Oboe Concerto and Pian Concerto.
