This is the GMG hyper romantic moment of the year !  Cant let it pass.

First: who was Saint Valentin ?
He was a Bishop of Rome who married soldiers against Claudius II orders who forbade marriage between young peoples.
These secret marriages were discovered and Saint Valentin was put to death on February 14th 270 AD bt order of Claudius II.  He was later canonized by the catholic church.

Musical illustrations for the Saint Valentin are nearly infinite.  I'll give some examples from the french repertoire.  There are really no boundaries between the classical and popular repertoire here, so I'll stray away a little from what is usually considered classical.

Song composed for Lucienne Boyer in 1930.  Belongs now to the world patrimony.

Song composed in 1784 par Jean-Paul Martini.  This is Rina Kitty interpretation from 1939.  There is a Berlioz orchestration.  The other two interpretations which convey the emotion completely are Victoria de Los Angeles and Nana Mouskouri.

Hymne a l'amour.

Song composed in part by Edith Piaf, after she learned her lover, the boxer Marcel Cerdan, perished in a plane crash, together with the violonist Ginette Neveu.  Here is a purely instrumental version, which I prefer.  Whatch out its a hires file. http://nitroflare.com/view/4844B9E8954DF4C/08_-_L%27hymne_%C3%A0_l%27amour.flac
