I'll have to answer twice...

From the perspective of living as one of several billion humans, literature is truly essential. Anyone on the planet may benefit from the wealth of historical literature, once it has been translated into a language the prospective reader comprehends. The capability to access the experiences and discoveries of others is invaluable, when confronted with  situations in which we have no personal experience.

From the strictly personal perspective, I'm a musician, first and last, for many years now. Music is the emotional lens through which l interpret my world. It sustains my spirit, and when the darkness of past memories begins to intrude, it leads me back to the light.

And so, since l must be selfish and reside within my singular life instead of the collective experience of humanity:
