Modern timpani ( l was a timpanist for several years before l switched to oboe full-time, and l know of modifications which will enable modern timpani to at least approximate the sound of the Baroque instruments. There is nothing that will enable authentic Baroque instruments to emulate modern timpani. So if one has to choose, the choice is rather obvious. )
