But not Fyodr Ilyich.   For one, he has my respect more than my affection.  For another, I don't think of him as being "Russian".  I don't think of him as having a nationality.

I suppose you mean Igor Fyodorovich:)

I am not angry, Sarge, only hurt  8)

I voted for Stravinsky only, to atone for Sarge's solecism.  Taking one for the team as it were.

:-[

At least I remembered Fyodor was in there somewhere.

You still have Weinberg in your list as a "Russian"  composer.   8)
When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."

Was there really only ONE VOTE  ;)  for Liadov?  0:)

Poetic licence, or, for the mathematically inclined,  rounding up to the nearest integer  ;)

But wikipedia says he was "Russio-Franco-American", so Jeffrey might not have gotten the name right, but the internationality. ;) There is no doubt that he is the most important (by some margin, I think) and deserves huge respect but I can also understand that not too many "love" his music.

For me it is similar with Pyotr Ilyich who wrote many great works in even more genres - I have to admire and respect that but there are quite a few pieces I simply cannot stand so I refuse to positively name him a favorite...
Therefore I am not sure I could name any as a favorite.
I love certain works of many but of all major candidates there are usually also considerable parts of their output I cannot connect with, don't much care for, don't really know or even dislike. (There are not many pieces I actively dislike but the Rococo variations and the Leningrad symphony are among them...)
Their oeuvres are very diverse and/or very uneven (in my ears).

So (with some apologies to PIT (but why does he have to write stickly sweet stuff like Rococo Variations and Mozartiana) and MPM because I simply do not know the most important piece (Boris Godunov) of the latter well enough)

Stravinsky
Shostakovich (mainly for the chamber music, despite some monstrous symphonies)
Prokofiev
Borodin (he did not compose much but I like almost I have heard quite a bit, and I think he is underrated)
Rimsky (great stuff but some tedious fluff as well)

And infinitely more than Elena Olegovna Firsova! It is an outrage!
