Is #2 Jeremiah Johnson (1972) starring Robert Redford?

Well, you got the time frame right (4 years up or down)  ;D

#1 No, no, it's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)!  Still The Duke in the white hat though.  :)

Also stars Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin.

Of course it is, that very picture is the key moment of entire film...

and now, pilgrim, get down to No.8. I'm sure you know it.  8)

Coincidentally, I also saw The Passenger, but not the Antonioni one. Mine is a 1961 film by Andrzej Munk (it's titled Pasazerka in Polish).

Yes a very good film. I didn't quite see it as the masterpiece many people do, but I should probably see it again then.

I honestly thought that more would be guessed by now. Is the selection too hard?

7 out of 16 isn't that bad! :)

Still, I vote you give us a few clues/more shots. Some of them seem vaguely familiar but I'm not sure...

I wish I could devote more time to this but I keep pressing "play" and watching that shop scene from Co mi zrobisz jak mnie zlapiesz. I know I shouldn't be admitting this - but I just can't stop. :P ;D

It's always a good thing to revisit. I should do that myself. I saw Pasazerka about 30 years ago, but to this day I still have very strong impressions and memories from the film's atmosphere and very special structure. But who knows?  I might react differently today.

I don't know any of your films and you know that I don't care for guessing. I would say that from the single shots a good half or two-thirds are not the sort of films I like to watch. sorry, but Maciek should be able to guess all of them.

Wow! You can tell if you like a movie based on one still? Reminds me of someone... ;)

If I see cowboys, western-looking guys riding horses, images of overcrafted facetiousness or warriors in gilded uniforms, then I can say it's not the sort of thing I like. So to answer your question, in some cases, yes, as you well know.

I hope you don't mean the shot from Les Diaboliques! ;D

Hints

No.2 - Spaghetti Western. Actor in the leading role (the one in the picture) also starred in Un homme et une femme, Il Conformista, Three Colors Red.....

No.3 - Late Noir but quite noir. Based on character not by Hammet, not by Chandler but by.... Director later made few nice films with Bette Davis and one about two bums and a train.

No.4 - British. Director made big splash with his first few films in mid 90s, later made a big flop with lavish production in which Leo DiC. swims alot. This redeeming little comedy (with one of the fines british actors) did for BBC after the flop, haven't heard of him much since....

No.7 Director is quite famous and was already featured in Lilas Pastia's selection. The actress in the picture is prettier one of the Denevue sisters.

No.8 Started as hugely successful stage play with the same cast. The film was major breakthrough for second male lead who then will go on to become a star of a greatest magnitude.

No.12 Is quite strange and bizarre Russian art film about early 20th century porn "industry" in Russia. Gorgeously shot.

No.13 Was officially released 21 years after being made due to the communist ban. Lead actor became known by role of young train dispatcher in same directors earlier film.

No.14 Is mid 70's Hong-Kong kung-fu flick, one of those that redefine the genre, set the standards and become legendary. Tarantino's Pai Mei episode in Kill Bill 2 could be considered as an homage.

No.16 Is Serbian. It's basic structure is one of "film about film". Director in question got rather wide acclaim abroad for his next film (which has something to do with Wilhelm Reich and was banned for some time locally) and which is currently available on Criterion DVD.  His next film was banned in quite a few countries but not in Italy where local post-production (dubbing et all) and distribution was done by Pasolini.

He, he. The hint was pretty straightforward (how many films featuring train dispatchers are there out there?) but for some reason I couldn't find the right shot...?

Hm, looks interesting. I'll ask my friend who worked at the Polish embassy in Belgrade for many years if she can get me anything by Dusan Makavejev...

#8 The Petrified Forest (1936)....it was my avatars breakthrough!  :D  Also starred Leslie Howard and some gal named Bette Davis.  ;)

There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

#4 Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise (2001)?
