Hungarian Jew who became an Israeli citizen.

Born in Budapest, he escaped the Nazi extermination program.
Attended the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest in 1949.
Studied with Kodaly and spent time with Hungarian gypsies, collecting folk songs.
Escaped to France after the 1956 Hungarian anti-Soviet uprising.
In 1966 emigrated to Israel.
The New Grove states: " Hajdu's style reflects his multi-faceted character. The influences of Bartók, Kodály and Milhaud mingle with his special affinity with Jewish tradition. Uncommitted to any fixed style, he delights in surprising, at times shocking his audience. His music is at once warm and ironic. His honours include the Israel Prize for Musical Composition (1997). When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."
