Don Giovanni

Hi everyone. I've been browsing through the forum for quite a while and I've finally decided to take part. I'm only 15 years old and my discovery of classical music only really began a year and a half ago. Since I'm obviously not in full time employment (or even part-time, for that matter) I have yet to amass a gargantuan CD collection but I'm pretty pleased with what I have got. My favourite composer is, unsurprisingly, Beethoven. My favourite works of his being the Late Quartets, Symphony No. 9, Violin Concerto and the late Piano Sonatas.

Despite being relatively new to classical music, I feel that my tastes have progressed quickly: at the moment the composers I am most interested in are: Webern, Berio, Nono, Schoenberg and Ligeti. There are still many gaps in my musical experience but they shall be filled as time goes on.

Anyway, I'm thoroughly looking forward to engaging in some lively banter and profound discussion with you all.

Wow, Don Giovanni, a very sophisticated list of composers there!  Welcome, and hope you enjoy yourself.  Lots of people here who like all the composers you mentioned (including me).  PS, from where are you writing?

You are very welcome my friend, you will find many admirers here of Beethoven, I amongst them.
The modern ones you name, will not do with me, but still one Mod wil be very happy with that list.

Above: See I told you so! ;D

Thank you all for your warm welcomes. Already in the last 5 minutes I've learned to love this forum. The main thing I like is its immediacy of response. On other forums - with fewer members - one has to wait for hours for a reply. Here, the reply is very sudden which makes the conversations more fluid.

bhodges, glad to hear you like some of the modern composers: they really need some sticking up for.

Harry, I'm writing to you from Windsor in the South East of England. Not too far from London (which gives me regular access to the opera house and various symphonies - lucky me  ;D). I'm sure many will know Windsor as the site of one of the main residences of Queen Elizabeth II: Windsor castle.

Yes, the rapid response means that my chiming in with a "Welcome!" seems late  ;)

I lived my self for almost two years in England, and since I am a avid ballet fanatic, that was the place to be, and the many other cultural highlights, although it must be said, very expensive. I even worked in the Savoy theatre for a while on the Strand, I am sure you know where that is right ;D

Don Giovanni

Yes, I certainly do.  :)

My favourite place in London, musically speaking, is the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. I saw a wonderful performance of Tosca last year and I'm seeing Don Giovanni later this year.

Well not being much of a opera admirer, I wish you nevertheless much joy!

. . . . . . Good stuff ! ! . . . . . . .  :D

Don Giovanni

 :) Thank you!

The Late Quartets are perhaps my favourite works in the classical music canon. Their depth and profundity astounds me at times. Besides that: they're incredibly good fun to listen to. I would rank them beside the Mozart operas in my ranking of 'favourite groups of works'.

Maciek

Hi and welcome! :D

Well, I'm another latecomer to this thread - we've already had some very pleasant exchanges elsewhere today. All the more pleased to officially meet you, sir. :D

And I'm another avid contemporary music fan! (There are quite a few of us here, and some composers too!)

Cheers,
Maciek

Well, slightly surprisingly, given your name comes from Mozart and your avatar is of Wagner! But a fine choice, though, of course. Welcome from me too (another Brit, but in East Anglia :-[)

Don Giovanni

Well, what I really meant was that Beethoven is so popular and so it's unsuprising that I would like him. I see what you mean about the whole avatar/name thing.
