If anyone is aware of other similarly long violin concertos, I would be interested to know 8)
And, moreover, it is art in its most general and comprehensive form that is here discussed, for the dialogue embraces everything connected with it, from its greatest object, the state, to its least, the embellishment of sensuous existence.

Archaic Torso of Apollo

The uncut version of George Rochberg's VC runs about 52 minutes on the Naxos recording.

Ok - that makes it into the poll. I've changed the poll to make it slightly different to the best or favourite polls. Obviously, the length of the Violin Concerto will depend on performance, so its not completely clear which is longest. Theres currently a performance of the Reger that lasts around 58 minutes on Youtube, but most performances are around 52-53.

Probably Elgar is the lightweight here, with some performances clocking in at around 49 minutes. The first performance of the Pettersson is about 55 minutes, it seems Rochberg and Tischenko are both around 52.

Asking the same question about Piano Concertos would be a little dull as its obviously Busoni, or, if you're willing to count unperformed ones, Sorabji. I don't think Morton Feldman wrote a Violin Concerto...

"Violin and Orchestra" is not technically a violin concerto but does last about 50 minutes.

Reger and Pettersson seem to be the ones where performances frequently last more than 55 minutes. Performances of the Reger tend to be slightly longer (Wallin/Schirmer 56 minutes, Scherzer/Blomstedt 58 minutes, Becker-Bender/Zagrosek 57 minutes etc) vs. the Pettersson (Haendel/Blomstedt 55 minutes, Keulen/Dausgaard 56 minutes).

Forchert/Stein (my only recording of the Reger) is "only" 54 minutes... I seem to recall that there were slightly abridged versions but 3 minutes could be easily normal tempo variations. And I think there is an ultra-slow recording of the Beethoven close to 48 min. or so (probably Mutter).

I think the Reger is considered to be the longest, at c. 58 minutes (including a 28-minute first movement).

I just assumed it was a 'favourite' poll, hence the Tishchenko vote. (I love Elgar, but on these things I will support neglected composers over standard-repertoire composers.)

And to complete the trio, the longest cello concerto (that I'm aware of anyway) is by Donald Francis Tovey, clocking in at 54 minutes.

I love the Boris Tishchenko Violin concerto No. 2.  At 52 minutes, it gets my vote.
