I love the work and think it's one of the most gorgeous things Sculthorpe has composed, but why so surprised?
I like it very much but probably just not enough for it to secure a no. 2 place on a list.

Oh, my lists are always in no particular order. I don't have the strength to actually put them in number of importance (to me).

Well.....I don't think any Sculthorpe will even be in my top ten at the moment...apart from maybe top ten 60s composition.

Sculthorpe is one of the composers located lower on my 'composer totem pole' whenever you start factoring in the first 50 years of the 20th Century, but, be that as it may, I still love so much of his music.

I don't know when half the stuff I listen to comes from but here's a go

1990: Toru Takemitsu - From me flows what you call time
1991: John Cage - 103
1992: Brian Ferneyhough - Terrain
1993: Thomas Adès - Living Toys
1994: Richard Barrett - Vanity
1995: Jo Kondo - Three Songs of the Elderberry Tree
1996: Helmut Lachenmann - Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern
1997: Salvatore Sciarrino - La bocca, i piedi, il suono
1998: Gérard Grisey - Quatre chants pour franchir le seuil
1999: György Ligeti - Hamburg Concerto

Gaspard de la nuit

Great idea for a thread!  The 90s are extremely neglected.  I'm surprised to see how many great works I was able to find.

Ligeti - Études (2nd book)
Gubaidulina - Jetzt Immer Schnee or the Viola Concerto
Cerha - Acht Sätze nach Hölderlin-Fragmenten
Lutosławski - Symphony No. 4 or Chantefleurs et Chantefables
Kurtág - ...pas à pas – nulle part...
Saariaho - Six Japanese Gardens or Graal théâtre
Birtwistle - Panic
Takemitsu - Archipelago S or Fantasma/Cantos
Rihm - Gesungene Zeit
Berio - Ekphrasis
Holliger - Lieder ohne Worte (2nd book)

Ooh, this is a tough question. I don't think I know many pieces from the 1990s. Here's my attempt though:

Adams: John's Book of Alleged Dances (1991)
Auerbach: Piano Trio (1992)
Glass: Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra (1995)
Gubaidulina: Viola Concerto (1996)
Holmboe: Viola Concerto (1992)
Ligeti: Viola Sonata (1991-1994)
Lindberg: Gran Duo   (1999/2000) - I'm counting this, even though its premiere was in 2000.
Part: Summa (1991)
Penderecki: Symphony No. 3 (1995)

OK, that's not quite 10. There might be a few more that I could add that I either 1) could not think of, or 2) like, but don't know well enough. I'll stick with this list for the moment though.

When I first saw this, I thought it's about works composed after the composer had turned 90. So I had Carter and Brian ready when I realised...

Well, age is not really what I think of when I think 'the 90s' especially when written as numerals not words................................
