Do you think too much pop/rock music can be a waste of time?

Give me Scriabin´s late sonatas over both of them any day and night!

I can think of so many other things I'd rather spend my time on.

I´d rather be "bored" by Krommer, Hummel or Rheinberger than "entertained" by Brittney Spears, Eminem or Justin Bieber.

That is perhaps a wise choice, but ask yourself: How many percent of the total output of Britney Spears, Eminem or Justin Bieber do you know?
(I'm not a fan of any of these artists if you think that).

If classical music people judge pop artists based on a few songs on MTV, is it a surprise if people into popular music judge classical music the same way?

What I have heard was more than enough to convince me it´s a total waste of my time to listen to them anymore.

I feel the same way about posts like the last couple of posts.

But your 5th tier "average, ho-hum music of the time" classical choices are equally a huge waste of time, and a lot less fun & entertaining too. Not to mention virtually irrelevant. Why would you even pick any of them - when you have so many better choices out there. I can think of many artists within 20th century popular culture that put those classical choices to shame.

This kind of post is why you are one of most misinformed members on this forum. The reason being is because it's not the music you actually care about, but rather making blank statements and declamations of how your opinion is the only one that matters and how you're such a superior intellect. You're no better than the people who put up no talent hacks like Brittney Spears or Justin Bieber on pedestals. In summary, you're as clueless as they come and the post I quoted above is confirmation enough.

We all should bow down to James because he's clearly the man that knows it all!

We are used to the fact that James is writing such things. Simply ignore, like I do.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

You're right, Harry. I should ignore him, because nothing will be able to penetrate that thick skull of his. ;D

James´ last utterance is indeed not worth replying, not least because it gives me the vague impression that actually someone else has hacked his account.

Once in a while someone like that is their own agent as straight man, i.e. they set themselves up so perfectly that all it takes is a few deftly chosen words which act as brief and minute surgical cuts to shut it all down; those cuts inflict a virtual wedgie on their respondent making the only possible response you get ~ if it is responded to at all ~ a strained and high-pitched, "Whatever."

"Whatever" is maybe not a bad word to remember when reading many an online post :-)

Justin Bieber is actually very talented. I happened to see a document about his childhood. Why does his music suck then? Well, it's commerciality. Blame the record company. Talentless people simply don't get recording deals. Even talented people struggle to get them most of the time.

Oh, but talentless people most certainly do get record deals and Bieber is as good of an indicator to this notion as any. Why does Bieber's music suck? Going into such specifics would not only be futile as you're obviously not going to budge on any reason I bring forward, but I've just got better things to do.

Really? If Bieber´s got such talent then he should have said "Up yours!" to any record company which forced him to do anything against his talent and move on doing only the music he wanted to. That´s what real talent and real artistic integrity is about.

Given a piano and nothing else to do, children automatically go ahead and discover how to play 'Happy Birthday'. Given a set of things to percuss, a group of children automatically discover polyrhythms. Etc.

Exactly my reaction as well. It doesn't make sense to say "you're working with a big record company therefore you're not talented". The notion of the artist who does art for art's sake and doesn't care about success is terribly romantic, and Romantic, but there are plenty of examples of great musicians making decisions for the financial reward. I mean, why didn't that Mozart bloke just stay put instead of heading to Vienna and writing piano concertos for concerts? He should've written whatever he wanted to write, not thought about what would make money...

Personally I think it's pretty clear Bieber has talent. I like a grand total of one song, but that's a completely different issue.
