I have been listening to the music of Francesco Maria Veracini [1690-1768] of late and I have really enjoyed digging out my limited collection. I find his music to be fascinating, unusual and unpredictable. I have three discs which contain his music....

I am looking to further explore Veracini's music and thus far the following have appeared on the Listening Thread....

I hope that I have not missed any.

So, are these the members' favourites or are there any more discs that are worth consideration?

Hello Aligreto - I own 3 of those sets shown above - at the top are the same Op. 2 works - I have the Hyperion recordings which have received great reviews (may have posted in the 'listening thread') - I also have the Op. 1 works inserted above.  Will look forward to further recommendations.  Dave :)

Thank you for the addition; how do you find that Op. 1 set Dave?

Well, not sure at the moment - purchased 3 years ago from Amazon and not sure if I've listened to the recording since then?  Actually, I pulled out my limited Veracini collection and am currently on Op. 2, but will play Op. 1 in the next day or two - however, there is an AllMusic Review attached w/ a 4*/5* rating although the reviewer was pleased but not thrilled w/ the performances; also Brilliant licensed the first half from Tactus (2002 recordings) and must have done the other half themselves (in 2006).  Dave :)

OK, thank you for that. I would appreciate it if you gave a comment after you eventually get to listen as I would be interested in the set as a prospective purchase.

Well, I've been listening to the Veracini Violin Sonatas, Op. 1 and am enjoying - as stated before, the first six were recorded in 2002 and the second six in 2006, but in the same church in Padua - in the AllMusic review given in my previous post, comments were made that the church's "acoustics are brittle and unpleasant" - I'm not hearing this at all on my den stereo; the recordings transition well between the two discs and the violinist, Enrico Casazza seems to have more assurance and flair on the latter date - Roberto Loreggian is on harpsichord throughout the performances, while the cellist changed.

Veracini was a virtuoso violinist, arguably the 'best' in his prime, kind of like a pre-Paganini musical superstar?  The writing for the instrument is indeed virtuosic and Casazza handles the passages well.  If you like the Op. 2 works, then this recording should please and the price cannot be beat!  Dave :)

Thank you very much for that Dave. You also anticipated and answered a question regarding that gap in the years between the recordings. Sounds like a good investment.

Well, let us know - might be OOP?  The cheapest that I see on Amazon USA is $13 (+ $4 S/H) for a used copy - maybe the European marketers have a good 'new' price?  Dave :)

Oh, I did not realize that it was that old; for some reason I thought that it was a more recent release.

No, the Brilliant recording of the second disc was done just 10 years ago, so not that old but depends on number of discs printed - on Amazon USA, I just saw 'used' offerings, so you'll need to check your sources 'across the pond' - may be available on Amazon UK or Presto in your area?  Dave :)
