Hello :o

Do I have to go through this verification stuff every time I log on and post?

bhodges

Hi Wood, and welcome. No, only your first post (this one) requires verification. Rob Lang, the site's owner, set up the verification process awile back, after GMG was overrun by scores of spam accounts.

So now the procedure prevents the spam bots from flooding the place.

Welcome again, and have a good time!

Charles and Tom Wood were composers and James a conductor.  Are you related to any of them ?  Welcome to GMG.

Wood! Great to see you here!

Welcome.

Man it has really changed over there.

The tonalists do not seem to get that in a sense they have essentially prevailed.

One of the things I have checked out is the number of members who are no longer active.  One of the ways I have done this is by checking some of the polls.  For example the "What type of music do you like?" poll/ atonal, tonal or both.

The result were:

4: atonal
87: both
49: tonal

I went and checked out which of these members were still active.

About 35% of the atonal and both crowd are no longer active.
Only about 20% of the tonal crowd have left.

If you look at the members who do not think there was a problem, the vast majority of them come from the tonal crowd.

These members remind me of a person who started a "Should avante-garde, 'modern,' atonal, serial, electronic or experimental music music be discussed in a 'classical' forum?" at Amazon a few years ago.

I have tried to track this.  The best I could do is that it seems that at one time about 20% of the threads were about post-19th century music.  Now it seems that it is down to about 5 to 7%.  If one factors out the great 20th century tonalists like Sibelius and Shostakovich it is now down to about 1 to 2%.

These figures may be completely bogus.  I do not know.  The only ones that can really address this issue are the managers of the forum.

If a person wants a forum that only talks about the great masters of the 18th and 19th century then you can find a home there.

If you like a little bit a everything you will like it here.  The members here are a much more open-minded.

Wood, we DO welcome you here, as with all the members representing that great Diaspora from another place and time.

We hope that you, and by that I mean all of you, will make a new start here, put what's past behind you, and combine with our community to discuss whatever music is of interest to you. The one thing we mods can assure you, if it is art music, you can discuss it here without interference. Our moderation philosophy is to encourage positive contributions and quash negatives. It is the best we can offer, the rest is up to y'all.

Regards,

Hi Wood, welcome.

Almost everyone I really know has migrated, who's left??

I wonder if Starthrower will be coming over or has he been inactive for awhile?

I miss Polednice. Haven't heard from him in maybe 5 years. He was a big Brahms fan. Also Couchie − a big Wagner fan.

Are either of these two lurking on this forum?

Thanks Karl Henning and Spineur.

I'm afraid Wood is just my non de plume, so I can't claim any relation. I do have some Charles Wood in my collection though.

You too Simon!

Figleaf wasn't too keen when I mentioned about joining here, but I'll let her know that you and COAG were asking for her, that may do the trick.

Klavierspieler as well, the Schumann fan, and dodecaplex who was..uhhh...banned for posting porn.

I think Polednice also got himself permanently banned by posting porn.

That was before people (including me!) figured out you could escape bad habits easier just by scrambling your password.
