Yes, Talk Classical, but I'm not going to publicly state my disappointment of that site.........

Yes I guessed it was, a forum must depends on its members but also the mods must play the game and not be officious jerks.

With apologies to Gurn, who was absolutely correct in saying "make a new start here, put what's past behind you", but: most of the mods there seem like good people, its the policies of the owner and head administrator that puts the mods between a rock and a hard place.

But, yeah, its just ancient history now.

Wood, be welcome here!

I bumped a thread that has been inactive lately but may well be of interest to some of our new members

Welcome.

Man it has really changed over there.

The tonalists do not seem to get that in a sense they have essentially prevailed.

One of the things I have checked out is the number of members who are no longer active.  One of the ways I have done this is by checking some of the polls.  For example the "What type of music do you like?" poll/ atonal, tonal or both.

The result were:

4: atonal
87: both
49: tonal

I went and checked out which of these members were still active.

About 35% of the atonal and both crowd are no longer active.
Only about 20% of the tonal crowd have left.

If you look at the members who do not think there was a problem, the vast majority of them come from the tonal crowd.

These members remind me of a person who started a "Should avante-garde, 'modern,' atonal, serial, electronic or experimental music music be discussed in a 'classical' forum?" at Amazon a few years ago.

I have tried to track this.  The best I could do is that it seems that at one time about 20% of the threads were about post-19th century music.  Now it seems that it is down to about 5 to 7%.  If one factors out the great 20th century tonalists like Sibelius and Shostakovich it is now down to about 1 to 2%.

These figures may be completely bogus.  I do not know.  The only ones that can really address this issue are the managers of the forum.

If a person wants a forum that only talks about the great masters of the 18th and 19th century then you can find a home there.

If you like a little bit a everything you will like it here.  The members here are a much more open-minded.

It was getting a bit boring seeing those perennial discussions about 4'33 & atonalism, as the 'antis' seemed to be willfully misunderstanding over and over again. I'm not surprised you all got frustrated and went. It then got even more boring. There are no interesting threads any more, other than the one discussing why everyone has moved on to the 'other' site!

It should be interesting to get to know the existing membership here too. This site is previously unknown to me.

Hi Wood, good to see you here  :)

As already said by a few of us, insist with Figleaf to join as well. She could revive the Opera and Vocal board which is somewhat a bit negleted here.

Welcome and enjoy!

Hilltroll73(Ukko)

Hi Wood. I hope you, and eventually figleaf, get on well here.
Salud e dinero... Hah! So that's what is missing.

Wood, we DO welcome you here, as with all the members representing that great Diaspora from another place and time.

We hope that you, and by that I mean all of you, will make a new start here, put what's past behind you, and combine with our community to discuss whatever music is of interest to you. The one thing we mods can assure you, if it is art music, you can discuss it here without interference. Our moderation philosophy is to encourage positive contributions and quash negatives. It is the best we can offer, the rest is up to y'all.

Regards,
Gurn 8)

Sounds perfect Gurn. Cheers.

I wonder if Starthrower will be coming over or has he been inactive for awhile?

Starthrower is still there, active on the jazz and prog threads. He's provided some good recommendations recently.

Yes, that seems to be it.

It is a bit weird over there at the moment. No interesting threads, and new members who seem vaguely familiar stirring things up. It is more of a social and general music forum now, but there is not much left.

Thanks to all for the welcomes. Figleaf isn't active on the internet at the moment, but I've suggested to her that she drops in here when she can.

63 pages of 21st Century music! That is a great resource, thanks Jeffrey.

Hey again, Wood.

Hope to see you as a regular. I've been going through more of the Ken Loach films with a friend who owns all three big boxes. I know you're a fan, so it would be great to talk about them on the Recently Watched thread in The Diner

Hi Simon

Yes, I'm a big fan. I'll seek out that thread, cheers.

Lol.  Since this has been specifically answered...

Q:  Does this other referred-to forum have a name?"
A:  Yes, but not a name generally held in any good standing.

I think we need a sticky of all old TC members who have a different name on here. I'm often not sure if I'm reading the post of an old friend (enemy? :o) or someone new.

Why on earth would they choose to change their user name, are they ashamed of past stupidity? if so that says heaps about them.

I totally embrace our members here who are in exile from Talk Classical. The more members we have, with all varying opinions and tastes, the better off we are. GMG is easily the greatest classical forum on the internet and this forum's roster of knowledgeable members is only further proof of that fact. Keep them coming!

Uhh i changed mine out of convenience. It's easier to remember 6 letters that happen to be my own name rather than 20 letters....
