"This Music Contains Olestra. Olestra  or acoustic guitar may cause abdominal cramping and loose stools. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some notes. Notes A, D, and E have been added." --FDA warning label on a set of Mozart string quintets

I had a great time reading the thread. Very well managed thread.

"Entertainment? Culture? Or both?"

Both... always.

Indigenous, from indigenous folk, through popular, including the 'classical' / antique traditional and the profane and sacred = all from a culture and reflecting the culture(s).

New from Pff Productions! The Depth Charge 3000!!As a follower of James, you know how hard it can be to keep the Faith. You're surrounded by non-believers and film music. What do you do? Now, with the Pff Productions Depth Charge 3000, you can instantly and accurately determine the depth of any music without accidentally exposing yourself to shallow pap!

How does the Depth Charge 3000 work? It's a miracle of modern science! "3 beeps and you'll know!" With our patented Charge Induction Coil, the Depth Charge 3000 bombards any music CD with harmless* thermodynamic flux waves:
You'll hear 1, 2, or 3 beeps to indicate how deep the music is:

Other fine Pff Productions products include:

WWJD (What Would James Do) Bracelet--Now in new colors!
New and Improved Sacred Syllable Prayer Bandana
* Mostly harmless: Melts pacemakers. Long-term use may cause testicular shrinkage, premature ejaculation, suicidal thoughts, joint pain, hair loss, short-term memory loss, and ingrown toenails. Use responsibly.

WELL, thank you for this!

I am offering free to the public my simple answer to
"How can people like that?"
"How can people find that music satisfying?" and all other like.

The answer is applicable in all cases, regardless of how high or how low the aesthetic Limbo bar is set.  It is so simple you will slap yourself on the forehead and then go into a face-palm of humiliating embarrassment when that flash moment comes when you realize "I coulda thunk this up all by myself!"

"How can people like that?"
"How can people find that music satisfying?" -- and all other like.
"They Are Not You."

I was stuck part-way through a student piece I was working on; when I commented to my comp teacher that I had no idea of 'what next,' hoping for some prompt from him, he replied, "Entertain me!"

Yes, Virginia, 'entertain'is a neutral word. Ergo, the most profound and revered piece of music recognized as profound the world round, will be 'an entertainment.'

Best regards
