I'm completely unfamiliar with his music. How is his style overall?
Personally I find it totally unmemorable. A lot of people think highly of it however. The style is tonal as far as I recall. The opening and closing sections of the 5th Symmphony were good but I didn't like the rest of it. I prefer the cover art to the music.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I really enjoyed Symphonies 2 and 10 (on the same album).  But they are a bit rhapsodic.  Not really tightly structured but floating ideas that did take me on an enjoyable journey.

Hehe. This made me smile 😃. Gunning is a real favourite of mine, so will be hunting Jeffrey down with stacks of large loudspeakers to place on his front lawn and play Gunning 24/7 until he relents.
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

Totally agree I supply a large woofer, the biggest one by Krell ;D
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Quote from: pjme on April 12, 2023, 01:53:32 AMIt is with great sadness we announce the death of Christopher Gunning, who passed away on the 25th of March 2023 at the age of 78 after a long and courageous battle with kidney cancer. He died peacefully in his bed at his Hertfordshire house surrounded by everything Christopher adored – his wife, his children, his dog, his beloved Bechstein piano and a garden full of plants and trees, flowers and birds, all bursting with Spring song. Christopher nurtured his love of both music and nature throughout his life. He passed on his passions ardently, inspiring and delighting all who knew him through his quirky humour and, most of all, astounding creativity that seemed endless. While Christopher is gone, and the sorrow of his passing is immeasurable, his music remains – unfading and full of life.

Had not heard of Gunning before seeing this thread.  After sampling some of his symphonic music, which was pleasant, I read a bit about him and discovered he wrote the theme to the tv series Poirot, which is among my favorites.

Sad to only have heard his music (aside from hearing it without knowledge of who wrote the Poirot theme) upon learning of his death.

Thanks, Jeffrey. Now you and others piqued my curiosity.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!
