I just got the Chailly production of Mahler's 10th, not bad.

My absolute favourite is an oldie:

Mahler Symphony no. 10
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
Simon Rattle
EMI 7 47301 2 (1985)

(cough, cough) Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

What a majestic, brilliant and beautiful piece of music. Simply wondrous.

But what recording? I have Chailly, and its lovely, but I am keen to hear Wynn Morris. Does anyone have this rare recording?

And does anyone have any further thoughts on this amazing symphony?

I have the Wyn Morris on casette. It was the first recording I heard of the piece, but I haven't played it for ages. But I remember that when I heard Rattle's EMI Bournemouth recording of the finale, I preferred the Morris, probably because I'd got to know the piece via that recording.

Ormandy/Philadelphia is pretty intense. I've got this on LP so can't comment on the recent CD transfer.

Rattle/BPO is very good in some respects, although spoilt a bit by Rattle's habit of playing the slow sections and slowly and quietly as possible. I assume it's meant to be intense, but it seems artificial. (By the way, he buggers up the Adagietto of the Fifth by doing the same thing.) This was my top Mahler 10 for a while, but now, I think my desert island choice would be:

Chailly's Decca recording. It's beautiful. Not as agonising as Rattle's two recordings, but this music doesn't need to be screwed up to fever pitch to move the listener.

I've got several other completions (Mazzetti, Carpenter, Wheeler), and while they're all interesting in their own ways, Cooke's version is the one to have.

that is not a word, period.
but it can be an abbreviation of the word "period", even if you don't read it as "period".
anyways, I've changed my mind. This is the Mahler 10 thread, it should end in ellipsis

i just noticed there's 4 Mahler threads on this page alone, and none of them are even mine...
