The Winds of Bozza

Eugene Bozza (1913-1992)

File him next to Francaix. Bozza is known for just one piece, the brilliant, short 'Scherzo' for wind quintet that shows up on nearly every recital disc. He also has a smattering of pieces that also seem to pop up on every trumpet, flute, or bassoon recital. If you have a French wind recital somewhere, there's more than a good chance that Bozza is on it.

You might have the best luck with Bozza just scrolling down YT vids, searching for "bozza flute", "bozza clarinet", "bozza trombone" , and so forth. I don't remember hearing his 'Aria' before, but, it's as good a recital piece as any other, very sweet.

The sun's out... maybe I'll rummage about for all the Bozza in The Library...

His most famous bit is the 'Scherzo' for Wind Quintet. Check it out, it's a short little blast that aaalways figures on those kinds of recitals (Francaix-Bozza-Fine-Poulenc-etc). He has at least one piece per wind instrument...

He's also known for 'En foret' (horn+piano), 'Rustiques' (trumpet+piano), a very nice Oboe Sonata, and a very nice 'Aria' (flute+piano). He might also be the most bassoon friendly French Composer of the era, beyond Jolivet.

Sure, he's light, but, as with much Francaix, there's a lot of fun to be had.

I don't even know if there are many all-Bozza discs out there, he seems to be mainly a "various artists" Composer.

OK, I'm giving up on Bozza. If you check his Wiki- Works List, it's just as long as Francaix or Milhaud, but only a handful of the pieces seem to be in regular rotaion. So, really, nothing to see. It will take me less than 10 minutes to listen to all my Bozza, after that...

I NOMINATE HIS 'ARIA' AS HIS MASTERPIECE... even though it's just another pretty melody. Written for, I believe, clarinet and piano, it has been transcribed... can anyone embed a YT?

OneHitWonder Bozza is usually featured as part of the "three essential French woodwind quintets", - Francaix No.1, Ibert '3 Pieces', and Bozza 'Scherzo'. Those three pieces alone are all one might need...

Bozza = Poulenc without the hits, or, Francaix without the hits...
