Larry David--great stuff, especially the "Beloved Aunt" episode!

Certainly there are some very funny American shows, but I think for sheer, rolling-on-the-floor hilarity, the Brits have us beat--Monty Python's Flying Circus (much funnier than any of the movies IMO), Fawlty Towers, Mr. Bean.
