Anybody here with the hobby of studying, observing and identifying spiders? I found this unusual one inside my tool shed window, orb covering the small window; body 1 1/2 cm total with legs a bit over 2 cm. Unusual are the two knobs sticking up on it's back like miniature horns on a rhino.

I've seen those plenty of times, and I still don't know what they are. In Florida we have a real problem with these large brown spiders. They don't build webs and prefer to hunt for food at night. I'm not sure what variety they are, but man are they scary!

It looks something like this, but more a uniform camel color and no hair to speak of.

We have lots of those in Texas. They're wolf spiders. They do make a funnel shaped web in the grass, you can see them in the early morning with dew on them. They hide and wait in ambush, then come running out and jump on their prey. Bastards'll bite you, but it isn't dangerous. Scare the sh!t out of you though! :o

I hate bugs! They all deserve to die. If a bug comes into my room I go crazy until I kill it. What are those bastards thinking, invading my room? A fckin bee came in the other day...I had to be careful not to the stung but I got it trapped in a corner and smackkkk! No more honey for that bee.

Im plenty nice to other humans, but bugs? If they cared for me they wouldn't buzz around and annoy me to death and crawl on me. Can't we just send them all to an island so they won't annoy me? Ants come in and steal my food and crawl all over the place, why do they deserve to live? If 50 thousand ants marched into your home would you share your hebrew nationals with them my dear?

I have always liked spiders.  Round here there are alot of large wolf spiders, a few brown recluses (a neighbor had a nasty case of necrosis from a bite), spiny orb weavers and a few of the larger golden orb weavers

This fellow, which is actually a wingless wasp, but which we, in Texas, call a "red velvet ant" can indeed sting you. However, for that to occur, you would actually have to try and pick it up, which only a fool would do with a critter colored red, since nature uses its reds wisely!  But really, 999 times out of 1000, they are no problem at all, and kinda pretty, too. :)

I was stung by one as a kid and have hated them ever since.

Here's a spider I found in my flowers the other day. Then, when she was much younger, the legs and most of the body were the same silvery-green color that you can see on the abdomen now. The orange patches are actually fluorescent, camera doesn't pick that up, so I would imagine that she is dangerous, to someone anyway. Kinda reminds me of my ex-wife... :D

Beautiful shot, Gurn! The spider also is very lovely, so I can't understand why you are comparing it to one of your ex-wives. Such a beauty and she is EX? Oh, you are allergic to fluorescent abdomens? Understandable.  ;)

I think it's because she tried to eat me after we mated... ::)  :o

It's as pretty as a handcrafted piece of jewelry. Some creative artist should copy it and sell it at Cartier!  8)

P.S.: There are some merits to celibacy!  ;)

I've noticed that a lot of the very small spiders are beautifully colored like that. Apparently they have no compelling need to hide from predators, or to be camouflaged for attack purposes like the wolf spiders are. Other than wasps, I don't really think that anything messes with them. Sort of reminds one of cloisonnes, eh?  I've got many other types around, I'll take a few snaps and put them up here. :)

Cannas, eh? Gurn the Gardener has a nice ring to it. :) My mother is a master gardener, so I grew up around plants my whole life. Her enthusiasm has rubbed off on me, but I have to resort to little pots on the balcony instead of the big pleasure garden I want. Ah, one day...

Yeah, love my flowers. And it isn't easy in this climate either. Not like when I lived up north where things grew all by themselves! Worth the effort though. :)
