There already is a super bowl thread. As I wrote there, I'd love to see the Pats win if only to put Goodell in an awkward spot and piss off all the deflategate related haters. I probably won't be watching the game though...

I'm not sure what to think of the game tbh. It'll certainly be the last Super Bowl I watch or care about watching. How the Falcons threw it all away towards the end will remain a complete mystery to me and makes me think these games are most definitely rigged.

In entomology scientists have observed among bees and other "colonial" insects a syndrome called "Sudden System Collapse" or "Colony Collapse Disorder."

I did not watch the game, but saw the score on the news when there were 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter.  Things looked grim indeed, but "it ain't over 'til it's over" came to mind.   8)

My ten-year-old son here in Atlanta was all jazzed up for a Falcons victory.

And in a sense, he got to see the Falcons win the Super Bowl.  When he had to go to bed, the Falcons were up 28-3.  It was a great game to watch for Falcons fans (up to that point).

Only that last little bit was unpleasant to watch (hypothetically speaking -- I wasn't even watching). But for much of the game, the Falcons played gloriously.  As a fan, I'm satisfied.  It was 10 times better than watching the Falcons losing the whole time.

A friend of mine gets very angry with me when I share my suspicions that these games are rigged.  I certainly hope I am wrong.  "These are top athletes at the peak of their form," he exclaims, "they aren't going to throw games for a coupla dollars!"  An old roommate of mine had an uncle who was a PhD'd "Sports Sociologist."  He was also of a mind that "many games are rigged."  Check out this curious video about last year's Superbowl on Youtube, for example:

Even I - growing up, the nerdiest of young football players (I was such a non-threat as a receiver the opposing team did not cover me; once when the QB threw the ball to me and I caught it and scored, the opposing team protested saying "he's not really playing!"), knew that you tackle low as you can to be effective.  Yet here this defensive player ("at the peak of his form" as my friend sez) sure looks either amazingly incompetent OR...

If rigging was involved the league would find a way to cause the Pats to lose. They have found a way through parity to reduce the likelihood that one team would just keep winning, by sending the best draft choices to weaker teams and imposing salary caps to break up concentrations of highly paid superior players. That's a kind of rigging. It half works as the Pats face different opponents in Super Bowls and conference championships. And they do lose these games as often as they win.
