Quote from: some guy on February 13, 2017, 04:13:07 PMOne reality of the last 16 years--of the last 60 years--is the resurgence of improvisation, so asking for "works" leaves out a huge swath of musical activity.

Within the context of this forum and the legacy of classical music & written composition? Not really. I like improvisation and try to do it myself ... but it ain't composition in the classical sense .. rarely could it be, either.

most "cutting edge" composers since the beginnings of classical music could improvise you know ..
I don't see how this activity relates to the thread. Can you list an improvisation that stands up to the best written music?

That's a written piece.

I wish you were right. But you're wrong.

BWV 653, 4 parts (& the earlier version, 5 parts) is a written piece of music ..

Yes but what he did for Reincken isn't as far as I know.

Yea .. we've all the read the reports, with all the talent & genius Bach had, there is no doubt that he was a great improviser & player, he could have easily taken a existing written melody/hymn and explored/passed-thru the various ranges on the organ  .. but all that's left behind is the extensive fully worked-out written version which came after.

I don't think I can just pick 3. Or 3x3. Maybe 3^3 if I really agonize over it?

;D

You would be proud of me. I've currently got folks over at TC voting on an Oehring & Ter Schiphorst piece in the piano trios list. And I only started listening to Schoenberg like 3 years ago :)

If you want to cubed numbers and indeces, why not take it further.....why not even go all the way to Graham's Number. ^_^

Wow, that is definitely something to brag about!

Still at TC is brave enough. But getting those people to vote on an Oehring/Ter Schiphorst piece? Heroic!!

Here are several that I enjoy:

Arnalds: Eulogy for Evolution (2007)
Kapustin Cello Concerto No. 2, Op. 103  (2002)
Koehne: The Persistence of Memory (2014)
Musgrave: Two's Company (2005)
Ritchie: A Bugle Will Do, Op. 67 (2000)
Sallinen: Cello Sonata, Op. 86: (2004)
Skoryk: Carpathian Rhapsody for clarinet and piano  (2004)
Tan Dun: Internet Symphony "Eroica": I-IV (2009)
Toussaint: Concerto for Improvised Piano, II   (2006)
Vasks: Sala - Symphonic Elegy for Orchestra  (2006)

I won't attempt to rank them or pick three.
