Back in the mid-2000's, another poster (since deceased) and I made up a composer named Franz Kromein, and had lengthy public discussions on this and other fora about his life and works. It aroused not inconsiderable interest, since he fit in nicely with the revival of such stalwarts as Krommer and that group. I liked it! ;)

There is Otto Jägermeier made up by the writer Rosendorfer (or more precisely by a character in one of his novels) and smuggled into several major German language music encyclopedias

Ouch, that really hurt! :o Karl, I'll be honest, i had no particular agenda here other than the funny Title, but, you sir, got right to the core... ahhh, I'm having bloggasm here!! :-*... maybe those flippin ThreeWordPostThreads ARE working?!?!?! Anyhow, for once, your ubiquitous OneWordReply (which aaalways derails my Post, thanks btw!!) has struck like a punch in the gut of OurTimesInMusic.

aaaaaahhhhhh,... the mere mention of those letters, together, in that order,... Gol... NO, don't say it, don't think it!!!! YES, ... oh, I am so refreshed!

Please, let's work backwards here... I think you've nailed one of our Top3 suspects OF ALL TIME. Seriously, I'm still in shock,-  I mean, Karl Jenkins is just an afterthought when you have someone like THAT around. Richard Nanes?

better get that martini-dakota before we proceed...

I literally felt Karl kicking Goli in the balls with that one :o. Who are your Top5 Fake Composers- I have a feeling you've got some great ideas!! I had no idea what I was phishing for here, but Karl hit the nail on the head so hard, I heard Goli's career shaking. I don't even think Jenkins or Nanes are fair game, we need BigNames,BadMusic.

Dag Henrik Esrum-Hellerup, the esteemed Danish romantic composer.

Vinteuil is a ficticious composer who appears in Marcel Proust du coté de chez Swann.  His ficticious violin sonata is probably more famous than the ones composed by most real composers.

Unfortunately the excellent wikipedia article on this Vinteuil sonata hasnt been translated in english (a GMG job ?)

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonate_de_Vinteuil

The russian-israeli composer (a real one !) Boris Yoffe (born in 1968) has composed Six Projets for a Vinteuil solo violin sonata, based on Proust evocations.

Those interested in the sonatas used by Proust as models for Vinteuil sonata can read the Wikipedia article.

Guglielmo Baldini is another one which springs to mind.

Fascinating, a hoax that went much further than the two I mentioned!
