Very innovative... I always struggled with his style. Why does he remind me of ferney?

Sad news, indeed. I've struggled trying to appreciate Holdsworth over the years, but have admired his session work in particular with Gong, UK, and Jean-Luc Ponty.

As a personal dedication to him, I just bought this 12-CD box set, which collects many of his solo albums:

That is a good one indeed. Metal Fatigue is a great album overall.
