I enjoyed this:

The one thing that puzzles me is his claim that "Locomotive Breath" is about overpopulation. Of course, he wrote the song, so he ought to know. But if he had not explicitly said so, I should never have gotten that out of the song itself.

One of the greatest songs ever recorded. It is used splendidly in an episode from the superb Fargo series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-p46qx7KVks

Thanks for that link Karl.  I enjoyed watching it.

Interesting to hear that his first wife, Jenny(?) showed him some photos that inspired Aqualung and that she helped write the lyrics.  Wonder whether or not she receives any credits/royalties for that?

Glad you enjoyed, PD! Interesting q. viz. royalties. She is indeed listed as co-author, so she must.

Nice!  Good to hear that!

And I didn't know that about Locomotive Breath either; I had thought that it was about something totally different.

I'm not sure what I thought "Locomotive Breath" was about, but I should never have guessed overpopulation. Just what is Locomotive B?, I have probably always wondered. Or, chances are high that, like a Wagner musical drama, I dug the music without much wondering about the words, even though they're very dynamic words.

Bert Jansch: Avocet

This album is one of those that is universally accepted in the folk [probably World Music today] and guitar playing fraternity as being among the best around. It is relatively short in duration but it more than compensates in terms of musical content, performance, atmosphere and presence, at least for me. The title track alone, comprising half of the album, is worth the money. It is imaginative and expansive music and music making and it takes one on a wonderful musical exploration. Open your ears and be receptive! The other tracks on the album comprise a mix of musical styles and I find the free interpretations of the music to be evocative of my era and still worthy of consideration. It is still a wonderful musical experience even after all these years!

I am probably the only person on the planet who simply never "got" the Elvis phenomenon.

If I never hear any Elvis again, it will be too soon. Subject of a mighty fine New Twilight Zone episode, though: "The Once and Future King."

My mom was a slip of a girl during the Elvis heyday, and she remains a dyed-in-the-wool fan.

I never "got" Elvis, either. I'd never voluntarily listen to his music.
Thank goodness I quit watching TV in 2010, so I have no exposure to his freakin' movies, either!

Karl Henning

Never watched an Elvis movie, never will. One shudders at the mere thought!
