Just listened to the first time Tangerine Dream's soundtrack to the film SHY PEOPLE (Andrei Konchalovsky, 1988). Really nice! The liner notes say Konchalovsky wanted Pink Floyd or Tangerine Dream to create the music to his film. He is himself a classically trained pianist and was a classmate of Vladimir Ashkenazy at Moscow Conservatory. This score is essentially Tangerine Dream's music influence by Pink Floyd and Konchalovsky classical training.

Andrei Konchalovsky is a prominent figure in the Russian cultural establishment. He is the son of Stalin-era court poet Sergei Mikhalkov, the author of the USSR state anthem's lyrics. Konchalovsky has directed films both in the USSR/Russia and in Hollywood, which is more of an exception than the rule. He is known for his political spinelessness and misogyny.

Good stuff. Love his Chess recordings, but his later work still managed to be consistently good.

Yesterday I found accidentally my "Best of Vangelis" compilation CD I thought I have lost. I listened to it today while prepairing my meal.

SPOTIFY:

Vangelis - L'Apocalypse des animaux (1973)

I quite liked this one. It is relaxing Ambient New Age music.

I like Opera Sauvage, Antarctica, Soil Festivities, and El Greco. Opera Sauvage is probably the best of the lot: "L'Enfant" was used in the film The Year of Living Dangerously.

Vangelis - Heaven and Hell (1975)

I have half of the tracks of this on the "Best of Vangelis" CD, but now I heard the rest. I am not big on this one except for the Jon Anderson collaboration "So Long Ago, So Clear" which is a beautiful song.

Oh, okay. It will take me some time to listen to what Spotify has got from Vangelis.

I've liked Vangelis since the mid-70s, starting with the albums Albedo and Spiral. Then came the film scores, especially Blade Runner. He's a very talented composer and an outstanding instrumentalist.

With all the Vangelis talk I went and played Soil Festivities again earlier today.

And it was really nice to hear it again after maybe ten years.

I listened to Albedo and Spiral today on SPOTIFY. I have about half of these albums on the "Best of" compilation album, but now I heard all tracks. I quite like the title track Albedo 0.39. The sound quality difference between these albums is pretty huge: Spiral has much better sound. I guess Vangelis bought new gear for Spiral...

My knowledge of his music isn't huge at this point, but there's aspects I like in his music and also some aspect I am not a huge fan of but then again my opinions may change...

His style evolved over the years. Those early albums have a sort of "look, I have a synthesizer!" feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXgNo5Smino Then his classic period with all the famous soundtracks. And finally his elder statesman years which I never paid much attention to TBH.
