"Gospel" in subject matter, perhaps. But I would have classified this as old-timey Country in the O Brother Where Art Thou style.

Still: a strong selection from the Smithsonian/Folkways catalogue that plays nicely.

Tomorrow night going to see Bruce Cockburn @ Levon Helm Studios, Woodstock NY.
Never been to that "famous" venue because it's pricey with hoser ripoff fees for online purchase (had to go that route to ensure standing room because seats sold out).
But I like BC, and given the location / recent events I expect him to be fired up and play an excellent selection.

I've known the two songs that always get airplay forever, of course. Overall, the album has a feel somewhat akin to the soundtrack to Yellow Submarine.

QuoteRobert Fripp has been very critical of the album, calling it "unlistenable" and lovers of it as "very strange". However, he revised his opinion upon listening to Steven Wilson's surround-sound mix of the album for the 40th anniversary reissue, proclaiming, "For the first time I have heard the Music in the music."

I found Lizard "interesting," but it didn't win my heart. Now: again finally: In the Wake of Poseidon

Too often too suggestive of mere "retread" of In the Court. "Cat Food" is great fun, of course.

Lizard was probably the very first King Crimson LP I ever held in my hands in the very early '70s. It left a very unusual impression. The music was very different from what I associated with western rock music like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple or something like that. Anderson's vocal on side two was enigmatic. This album immediately and permanently put King Crimson on a special shelf in my perception. All albums of the early seventies were mesmerising, each was a discovery. Unfortunately, after the revival with the red, blue and yellow albums from Belew era, this variety and sense of exploration was lost. All the albums started to resemble each other, and the sound reminded me more and more of the noise of a food processor.

Me, I was incredibly jazzed when I saw the Discipline LP in the record store, and already knew Belew's work with Zappa and Talking Heads, and Levin's with Peter Gabriel. This lineup always appealed to me.

It's funny. Although I would not call it the best song on the album, the tune/lyrics I've been hearing in my inner ear since listening to And Then There Were Three with my Phys. Therapist last week is "Burning Rope."
