Early Delta Blues - what to read & what to listen to?  8)

I'd like to recommend a couple of books (already done earlier) on exploring the early '20-'30s Delta Blues for those who may be interested in this music.  One of the best introductions to this music is Robert Palmer's Deep Blues from 1981 (unfortunately he died in his early 50s from liver disease in 1997, so NO update) - short & excellent personal exploration of this period & its music - a recommended start!

At the moment, I'm about half way through a new book on the Delta Blues by Ted Gioia - this is a longer commentary w/ updated research and new insights; complements & expands on the Palmer book - both are great reads if you want to know about this music; today, I've been listening to several of the blues artists under discussion, i.e. Charley Patton & Tommy Johnson (a likely relation to the great blues guitarist, Lonnie Johnson - I own a lot of his recordings!).  The Patton CD is a decent one disc review of his recordings - multiple CD sets are available - sound is generally poor to decent on many of Patton's recordings; T. Johnson made few recordings and those on the Wolf label are pretty representative; I'd appreciate any comments - thanks.  :D

Have you read ESCAPING THE DELTA by Elijah Wald, Dave? I recommend it.

Is that good?

It's awesome! I don't know if it's my favorite Todd album, but it's definitely his most focused and concise.

Have you heard the Utopia song "Crybaby"? I heart that song.

Unrepentant fun: fast, heavy, poppy, catchy, escapist, etc.

Ha! Had that disc in my hands in a shop maybe an hour ago, and didn't buy it, was considerig that, Argerich-Kremer-Maisky Tchaikovsky/DSCH trios and Hagen Quartett's Schubert Quintet, but all were fullpriced and I wasn't in a spending mood.

Milos why don't you download it? Or is that a stupid question to ask?

In honour of the Schonberg on Sibelius thread, some Nile.

Not the question, the answer is stupid - forgot to.

YOu didn't answer my question.  :(

Oh sorry, completely forgot :( — I haven't actually heard an entire Utopia album. Strange, considering how much I like Todd.

In the absence of Fiona Apple, Ms Yamagata fills the void just fine.
