The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

An interesting album. Upon its 1971, it caught the attention of Spiro Agnew who complained about its lyrics. Today that would drive sales up, but at the time his disapproval made Atlantic afraid to promote it and it died a quick death. According to Allmusic anyway. (Agnew was no Quayle. Allegedly he  called Atlantic Records privately rather than make a public case out of it.)

Very much a blend of styles: funk, jazz, soul, folk. Reminiscent of Gil Scott-Heron at the time--not derivative whatsoever but certainly emanating from the same atmosphere.

Alas, I don't have it. CD and LP prices are high, and, as is often the case, the cheaper sellers won't ship to my location. I listened to it one YouTube video at a time.

I actually got a (new) CD of that, not so long ago (year or less?). In the same batch, also a Japanese reissue of this  ;D

Bought from Dusty Groove, who's a great source for reissues of such things. I follow their "Coming soon" page https://www.dustygroove.com/coming-soon/jazz

I agree with "interesting". I like "spiritual" / "message" jazz of the 60s-70s-(to an extent) 80s and on ("Strata-East" kind of stuff, for instance; also the "Black Jazz" reissue series on Real Gone). The McDaniels wasn't as good as expected, but I still listen occasionally.

Interesting!  I'm part way through it.  :) You might enjoy watching some of Norman Maslov's youtube videos (if you haven't already).  He's a favorite youtuber of a friend of mine; I've watched some of his videos before and enjoyed them overall.  One thing of note:  he has an impressive Beatles collection (though he does listen to quite the variety of music overall).  Here's a link to his channel:  https://www.youtube.com/@mazzysmusic  In "real life", he's an artist rep and lives on the West Coast.

Here:  After watching the second season of Yellowstone (which I'm glad that I persevered with in the end), I've been noticing a number of contemporary singer-songwriters which have been featured in it and have been enjoying what I've been hearing.  Didn't also realize that Kevin Costner also is in a band (Modern West) which seems to have done quite well at times in terms of album ratings.  I'll provide some links to some of the songs used in the show at some point in time.  Lots of talented artists there!  :)

Strong similarity between the two "vinyl heads". Norman Maslov is an entertaining fella for sure.

His background is quite interesting.  From his youtube channel:

"Description
My friends call me Mazzy.

This channel is primarily about music and my record collection, however on occasion I will post something on another topic, which may not be of interest to the music or vinyl community. Please read the titles.

Norman Maslov , a native San Franciscan, is an Artist's Agent representing a small group of extremely creative commercial photographers. His agency, Norman Maslov, Agent Internationale was founded in 1986.

Mr. Maslov attended San Francisco State University studying Communications and Film, which led to a strange ten-year stint in the Recording Industry. Starting in retail record stores, he later moved on to promoting and marketing artists for MCA and ABC Records. Mr. Maslov is a passionate music lover, record collector and co-author of the very first travel guide of Beatles sites titled The Beatles' England.

He now lives just north of San Francisco in Seattle. Always snarky, never too serious."

Doing well, thanks.
Turned 65 and retired from half of my jobs.  ;D
Not listening to much classical of late, so spending less time on the forum. Lurk some, but not in touch with latest developments so little to post.

Yeah. It's a good album. Maybe even very good. But I wanted it to be great and it isn't quite there.

I spun it again a couple of times after your post, enjoyed it more than on previous listens. It's a very good album, better than I implied above. Agreed that it doesn't quite hit on all cylinders. OTOH, it's aged more gracefully than many "socially conscious" works of that vintage...
