Close To The Edge – Super Deluxe Edition

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame® Inductees and GRAMMY® Award-winning progressive rock pioneers YES unveil a robust new Super Deluxe Edition of their massively influential classic fifth full-length album, Close to the Edge, on March 7, 2025.

This definitive version comprises 5 CDs, 1 LP, and a Blu-ray. A newly remastered version of the original Close to the Edge graces both CD-1 and LP; the Blu-ray houses 2025 mixes by Steven Wilson in Dolby ATMOS and 5.1 Mix DTS-HD MA for the very first time; Wilson's remix and instrumentals also adorn CD-2. An unearthed bevy of rare and previously unreleased recordings for the Super Deluxe Edition is featured on disc 3, and a 1972 live show on discs 4 and 5.

There was a time, in mid 70s, when this Yes album was my absolute favorite. I think I could "play" it in my head from the first to the last note.

Steven Wilson's remixes are very good, including this one.

I managed to get Fragile by Yes, which contains their most illustrious piece Roundabout. It's in DSF format (I'll make a 24/88.2 to play anywhere on anything).

Here's the thing about high rez formats like SACD and high bit/sample PCM. They are audibly indistinguishable. However in the case of SACD sourced files you are somewhat more likely to have the dynamic rage of the original masters preserved than is the case for many CD remasters subject to the loudness war.

Pandit Pran Nath, recording made with the participation of Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Marian Zazeela.

Terry Riley's Persian Surgery Dervishes first came to my attention years ago, originally released as a double LP. It's one of those rare recordings that feels both meditative and utterly transporting — a truly spiritual experience, if I may say so. Riley was clearly deep in his explorations at the time, and it shows. The fact that it was recorded live only adds to its immediacy and charm — there's a certain raw elegance to it, not unlike the performances I used to hear in India. Quite remarkable, really.

The album Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band - All Night Flight by Terry Riley was recorded live in 1968. At the time, Riley was performing all-night concerts inspired by similar performances by Indian musicians. This recording is a 40-minute compilation taken from one of those events.

Poppy Nogood is a favourite piece, and that's a great recording, I wish there were more.  Recently I heard an electronically augmented string quartet play what was pretty much a note-for-note transcription of the original Columbia version - which sounds like it could be (and I was half-expecting it to be) a terrible idea - but in the event turned out kinda wonderful. :)

Opeth - Orchid

30 years since this release, and seeing the consequent play increase 'out there', I thought I'd revisit. Most of the day with Opeth as a result.

Opeth - Deliverance
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Opeth - Ghost Reveries

Another Terry Riley album blending minimalism, world music, and electronic soundscapes — an accessible introduction for those not yet ready for his more relentless and endlessly repetitive patterns.

I have a deeply annoying Daniel Seavey earworm, Sleeping with the Light On. Great song,  but it just won't go away! Had it for days now 🤨
