I understand completely about making mixes.  I don't really think I know any of the stuff on there.  Sure I've probably heard some of it, but I'd never be able to tell you who it was if you played it for me blind.

Love the photo op, Allan, but you gotta bring back the Deadwood Reject.....by far my favorite Personal Text submitted by a GMG'r!
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

On one condition, you bring back Lauren. Better to be sexy than cool.  8)

Daptone Records, the same as the recently-mentioned Sharon Jones albums.

I'm just going to quote the product description:
From the folks who brought you Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings...Deep in the heart of Mississippi lies Como, a small rural town where children and grown folks alike have been living and breathing gospel music for as long as they can remember. In July of 2006, Daptone Records placed a small ad in a local paper inviting local singers to come down to Mount Mariah Church to record their songs. The result is ''COMO NOW,'' a stirring collection of traditional and original gospel from the voices of COMO's own families.

Check out the official Daptone youtube clip:

This is some incredible music!

I am not disliking it as much as I did initially, but I still don't like the band.

This CD is fantastic.  In 2007 I heard Thomas live in New Orleans, in a tribute to Mahalia Jackson that was about as stirring as it gets (of course the continuing post-Katrina mood had emotions running pretty high).

She has a brand new album out called Simply Grand. I didn't mention it in the previous post because that was dedicated to recent retro soul while this is acoustic piano-based (hence the title), but it is a really good album. I'm glad Rounder's taken her away from the 'safe' R&B direction they had her in a for a long time.

Kevin,

Dude.....good looking out on that one!!!!  Sounds great.  I've been interested in exploring some gospel stuff lately anyway, especially quartet stuff, any Kev's picks there?

My gospel knowledge is spotty. Some aspects I know pretty well (Mahalia Jackson), some not so much (alas, quartets). This album is probably the closest I can get you to that. Some of the the tracks are solo but many (roughly half) feature small vocal groups, and it's all a capella.

For gospel piano stuff, I really like the Sirens label (which specialises in Chicago piano, be it gospel, jazz, or boogie woogie).

Morning!

While I'm trying to decide which classical piece to listen to I thought I'd play this to get me in the mood for the release of the new next week. I like this as much as Year Of The Cat. Palace Of Versailles is my favourite track.
