A Who gig I attended a few years ago (actually quite a few years ago now):

Now for something a little different.  I really love the theme from Kelly's Heroes:

Oh man this is such guff. It's as if simply touching an electric violin dooms the victim to a lifetime of producing terrible music. I've never heard anything good emerge from one.

Then you should listen to Directly From My Heart To You in Zappa's version with Don Sugar Cane Harris on electric violin!

The Complete Bitches Brew..something I haven't listened to in at least 15 years, hated it at that time but trying my best to dig into it this time around.

Have you compared that to the original Reprise CD George?  Is it really better?  Most of those old Joni CDs sound fantastic, including Blue.

No, I haven't compared to the Reprise. But it sounds like she's in the room on the DCC.  8)

The Reprise CD sounds like that too, and so does the original US vinyl.  It's an excellent, intimate recording.

Not to mention some sublime music and lyrics.  8)

Now comparing my needledrop of the Aussie vinyl to the old Aussie CD (apparently there's a remaster around of this album now).  I always found the CD to sound flat and boring.  It has improved enormously with upgrades to my system over the years, but the needledrop still has just a little extra pop and energy.  1982:

It's definitely one of her best.  Are you a Joni completeist George?  I used to be, although recently I decided I didn't like anything after Taming the Tiger and sold off a few CDs.

I just have that one, Court and Spark and Ladies of the Canyon.

Cool.  I love her jazz-influenced period.  Hejira is essential (the number 12 album of 1976 on RYM).  I really dig Don Juan's Reckless Daughter too.

Yeah, that one is on my wishlist. I've been meaning to get it.

You should be able to find the old Asylum CD cheap in the bins.  It sounds excellent - much better than the HDCD.

Good to know, thanks!

A lot of those early Joni CDs were mastered by Steve Innocenzi (probably only the Asylum ones).  They're not talked about a lot at sh.tv, but IMO they are some of the best sounding CDs from the 80s.
