Love this album, Greg!

Absolutely love it. . .

Have you heard their latest, The Terror, by any chance?

Yes! This is a great album, very inventive.

I have not heard The Terror, you?

Have not, though all reviews I've read regarding it point to it being very dark and synth-heavy.  I'm sure that I'll check it out at some point. . .

Sarge for the win with the babes today!  Well played.

Seconded! In fact I have both the CD and DVD Audio versions... (Love both - and I think the DVD Audio includes the regular stereo version of the recording)

re: Keith Jarrett's 'American Quartet' and Impulse recordings:

While I like all of his bands, the European Quartet and the Standards Trio in particular - the American Quartet that recorded mainly on Impulse is where the band says something which transcends Jarrett.

Agreed!  Almost certainly my favorite music from him, barring some of the solo improvisation and several other things.  Their ECM studio record SURVIVORS SUITE was a major jazz favorite of mine for a while.  The mysterious opening with all those folk/ethnic (?) instruments; moaning recorders of various sizes; Haden's thick, hypnotic, oily bass resurrecting a mid-60s Coltrane-style vamp in slow motion; Dewey Redman's heroic emergence with the cyclical theme on tenor.   I am not sure how I would feel about it today, but I have vivid memories of enjoying that album many times.

I really wish all those Impulse recordings would get reissued as a single box; those are two sets I lost, and the orange one has become tres cher.

That is a good appetite whetter - but if you like this music you should check out the two boxes that compile all the recordings from this band:

@ sanantonio, Yes, I have been thinking of getting those box sets you mentioned for awhile now. I also like his "Koln Concert", though as you say, that's an individual rather than a band effort. Thanks for your input/insights on this! I fully intend to get deeper into Jarrett's output in future.

I had forgotten about that ECM record.  I don't think I ever owned it, but thanks for the reminder, I will try to hunt it down.

:)

EDIT - in fact I had forgotten or essentially ignored the records this band made on ECM.   Eyes of the Heart, Bop-Bee and Byablue are the others they recorded on ECM at the end of this bands existence.  From what I know of those other three, the internal dynamic of the band had begun to deteriorate and the music, except for Survivors Suite which is universally lauded, suffered.  I just imported SS into my Amazon Cloud Player and will listen to it shortly.

I still think the Impulse records represent the primary legacy of this band.

:)

Hey sanantonio!  Thanks for your thoughts and the pm too, btw!

I am a huge fan of Eyes of the Heart; it's one of my favorite Jarrett releases.  The tension between the players makes for some really incredible suspension/release on that one.  By the time Dewey Redman comes in with his tenor sax, it's a like a huge rush; a very thrilling listen overall.  I also love The Survivor's Suite studio release.

Grabbed this one at the record show today (image from the web). Some nice "spyish" licks from Barry here. Never have seen the show. Need to find an episode on the web and check it out.

PS Definitely picking up some "Bond" sound!
