My Summer Vacation:

My summer has been fruitful. I've been able to compose without distraction as my wife and I are living in different provinces for the time being (we're moving from Edmonton to the Toronto area). Anyhow here are two of the works composed this summer.
A rugged on the outsides Piano Sonata (15) and a divertimento for three winds.
On reflection, the Sonata is somewhat aggressive and relentless in the outer movements.

Here is a new selection of my more melodic, quasi-tonal work. Please listen to as many works as you like and, if you have a favorite, tell me.

They include a movement from a chamber symphony, some sonata slow movements, and two piano shorts, one of which reveals my "prankster" side.

I like the 14th Symphony movement; it reminds me of Copland, in a good way. The Violin Sonata movement is touching. It needs a real violinist. What do the other movements sound like?

Thanks for the comments, Robert! I suppose my profile photo reveals the fact that Copland is one of my favourites. I composed the "awakening" movement as a memorial to my mom who passed away right after I completed the 14th. I was envisioning her afterlife; waking up--feeling brand new, then strolling around a carnival-like piece of heaven.
I enjoyed composing the Violin Sonata 2. I can post the outer movements on soundcloud.

Two years ago, I wrote a work for winds inspired by a wicked tornado-bearing storm I witnessed in Minneapolis. Recent events in Houston have freshened my memory of the anxiety one feels before the chaos of a storm. It is for concert band and gets pretty wild in the center!

Oh....it's a long story but I'm still uncertain as to where we are going :( . I've split the summer living in three different residences. It's work-related (for my wife). So I've been frustrated in terms of composing, etc. But I'm at home for the next few weeks :)

I've just completed a new work. It's a chamber symphony of sorts, with a solo cello featured. Like my other sinfonias, it's between 10-12 minutes long. I'd decided last week to compose a concerto-like work in a lyrical, quasi-tonal style, and this is the resulting work. I am certain to make some minor revisions. Here is my latest...

Crudblud

Rivers Beyond has some very striking moments, for me particularly in the second and third movements, and a good sense of unity overall. Some of the wilder, denser rhythms and counterpoint get lost in the homogeneous timbres of the string sounds, but my ear being accustomed to these kinds of renderings it's not so difficult to see through to the music itself. I like it.

This is an Elegy for string (midi) orchestra. As my mom was in hospice care I composed it as a middle movement of a SQ. I finished it it upon her passing on June 1st this year. She always liked the tonal 20th C composers (Barber, Copland, RVW) so I conjured something I think she would have liked; even if I weren't her son.

Thanks Karl. It's great to get positive feedback from you. I've been revising some works ( they all need it!) and sometimes arranging for different instruments.

You're right. What was I thinking?I haven't composed for solo flute for a reason...Of course, I use flute very often (and enjoy it!).

Odd. Other than Bach's BWV1013, I don't think I've ever willingly listened to a piece for solo flute.
