Hi, everybody - being assimilated into joining the forum after a long time lurking.  :)

I've only been listening seriously to classical music for about four or five years. It was basically the last major genre I hadn't explored, but now I've jumped in with both feet. It's truly appalling, the amount of money I've spent. Not to mention the amount of unlistened-to music that awaits me. :o :D

But I'm still very much a newbie in classical. That's why I'm here, to acquire that effortless mastery that so many of you have achieved!

I'm interested in all music from all eras, but right now jazz and classical are my two chief concerns. In jazz I listen to everything from Jelly Roll Morton to Nate Wooley (the current jazz/free improv scene interests me the most), and in classical I'm similarly game for anything from Baroque to the present. (Pre-Baroque music has yet to catch my fancy, but I'm prepared to learn!) Based on what I've heard so far, I seem to be gravitating most to the Baroque and Late Romantic/Early Modern periods (e.g., Mahler, Shostakovich, Sibelius, Martinů, etc.). I have nothing at all against more daring kinds of modern "classical" music (remember, I listen to free improv!), but I haven't yet heard much that I've found especially compelling. (Except Henningmusick, of course! 8))

Welcome! What pre-baroque music have you heard so far? I'm quite partial to the sacred music of Perotin and Machaut (and Byrd and Gesualdo for music much closer to the Baroque), but I also love some jolly secular ars subtilior and other things every now and then. :)

Any time you wish to delve further into the contemporary classical music world there are a number of great threads with fascinating recommendations you may have seen already during your time here....but feel free to start some more!

Thanks, jessop! Gosh, I can remember when you were a mere stripling (and known as ComposerOfAvantGarde).  :)

To be honest I haven't heard that much pre-Baroque - just sampling here and there, really. It can be quite beautiful, but all that singing tends to get a bit samey to me after a while - and as I don't have much religious feeling, the subject matter that predominates eventually makes me roll my eyes. But I'm sure there are subtleties and pleasures I'm missing.

Thanks too for the encouragement re: contemporary music. It's an area that interests me, for sure.

Oh goodness, you remember that? I do apologise, I don't recognise your user name now. :o

Hi Alex,

I too have only got into this whole oevre in the last 4 or 5 years, and have also probably spent a similar amount of money (but am not prepared to tot it up). The only real remnant of my listening to jazz is ROVA; I was mainly a rock fan.

This is a great place to hear about too many composers, read too many opinions and spend too much money as a result.

CoAG is being quite well behaved.

Welcome Alek. Looking forward to hearing about your Free/Improv jazz favorites.

Have we met before on another forum?

Yeah, it was of course at the other forum. You were in your Ligeti phase at the time. :)  And I was more of a reader than a contributor.

I've only heard Répons and Dialogue de l'ombre double on the DG recording, along with some YouTube snippets, but it's been enough for me to infer that he's someone I'll like. I have the Complete Works, actually, but I have yet to dip into it.

Appreciate it, nodogen! I'm still a rock fan too, but I listen to it less now since I have so much jazz and classical to catch up on. :)

Welcome to GMG, Alek!

Thank you, Karl! I must say, at the risk of being labeled a brown-noser, that I think it's a bloody shame that your work hasn't made it onto a commercially-produced CD yet (or has it?). Why not Karl Henning in the Naxos "American Classics" series?

Thanks, Simon. I've really been enjoying your posts (and King Ubu's) in the jazz listening thread. My wishlist, already burgeoning, has increased yet more. ;)

Yes, I was an infrequent contributor at the TC forum. I guess I'm still a member, but I haven't visited there in over a year. I've found this forum to be much more enlightening. I've been glad to see some other TC alumni here, such as you, jessop, Mahlerian, and others.

Indeed, they record just about everything else!  Perhaps one day.

Sorry that I don't remember you at all, but we here are always ready to welcome people from other forums.

We're getting the band back together, man! We gotta see what's happened in music since we broke up back in '63.

Thanks, aligreto! I consider it a support group for those who have that CDCDCD affliction. Or, actually, we're all enabling each other's habit. ;)

Thanks, Bruce! I agree that there's lots of good stuff - almost a surfeit, in fact. It's hard to keep up with all the discussions!
