Top Haydn compositions . . .

Top Henze compositions . . .

Consider this in the light of harvesting listener feedback.

Which 5 Henning works do you think best of?

Thank you in advance for your participation.

nor in competing for the favor of wayward friends.
His only competition was with himself. — Françoise Gilot

Florestan

Otomh, I remember I was very positively impressed by Out in the Sun and a choral work based on a Maronite Marianic hymn (if I'm not mistaken).
There is no theory. You have only to listen. Pleasure is the law. — Claude Debussy

Best is always problematic, but I can list five favorites.

Viola Sonata
Symphony No.1 Op.143
Pachelbel's Loose Canon Op.133 No.1
De profundis, Op.78

Although still a work in progress, I have to include your ballet, White Nights.

Sarge
the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."
                               --Charles Bukowski, "Mahler"

How did I miss this topic 7 years ago?!  ???  :o

Well, I have found it now!

In no particular order...

Not to be forgotten, the ballet White Nights!

Yes, yes, I know, the list has more than 5!   It is unconscionable, yes, but I do this most of the time with "Top (Insert Number)" lists!   ;)

Cato, thanks for bumping this thread. Forgot how badass Karl is as a composer. Also, I came across the "first" Karl Henning in the process, a 19th century composer: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5o_pTH40cGQ

Those are wonderful choices also: certainly your #1 is one of Karl's best out of many "bests" available!

Here is another White Nights excerpt: for those who are newer here and unaware of it, the work is based on a Dostoyevsky story.
