Ludus Tonalis

I have Bernard Roberts on Nimbus, but, that Nimbus sound is its usual somewhat distant self, and, to my ears, Roberts is a little poundy/clanky. I was checking out some samples, here's some thoughts:


Mustonen: he has that technique thing of his, a forte-piano like staccato, that some may find annoying. I tend to like his style. I                had this one a looong time ago and can't remember ... wait, maybe that was Shostakovich/Alkan?

Richter: didn't hear; "they" say he's just TOO "monumental", and the sound isn't so great.

"Point Classics": didn't hear; this one gets low marks on Amazon.

Berezovsky: this sounds like a typical Teldec, wonderful. They say he plays too "Romantic", but, eh,... it sooounds good!!

Edward Atwood: this is the one "they" all like, and, to be sure, it has the monkish concentration and pruned fingers that  makes
                           this game sound thrilling. The opposite of Berezovsky; I like both, but this one is probably the "correct" one.

Osbourne: most like this as best, but Atwood may be crisper- didn't hear this one yet.

"some Russian lady on Melodiya": I think I had this a looong time ago. Perhaps the sound isn't up to snuff?



I think there's about two more recordings. There sure aren't many. What do you think?

Well, a bit more than two: John McCabe (Hyperion/Helios), Hans Petermandls (Marco Polo), Siegfried Mauser (Wergo), Ivo Janssen (Globe), Edward Aldwell (ProPiano), Martin Perry (Bridge), Siglind Bruhn (Equilibrium)
McCabe is the one I have. Now, I should also listen to it soon. . .

This is one of those pieces where I just want to luxuriate in the utter sound of it all. I wonder if any of those off-brands have as good sound as the first rank? Again, the Nimbus left me wanting more...Aldwell very impressive...

I think there are plenty more, Anatoly Vedernikov for example. And Siglind Bruhn. And Ivo Janssen (twice I think) And Siegried Mauser.

Jn McCabe is mighty fine, IMO.

He's not everybody's money, but I enjoy Mustonen here, too.

Dieter Goldmann's recording isn't particularly interesting, IMO. I'd be interested in hearing McCabe some day.

Natural enough. Even in Canada we call Angela Hewitt "Marc-Andre" in our forgetful moments.

I have had McCabe sitting on my shelf, unheard, for almost a year. Must remedy that.

I have have it on good authority that all those Hyperion pianists are actually pseudonyms for Joyce Hatto.   

In any case, I've got the McCabe/Demidenko/Osborne/Cooms/Roscoe/Hamelin.
