Looks German to me.

Nope, but I'll give you and everyone else a clue: this composer is probably most remembered for his string quartets and a concerto that won him the Pulitzer Prize.

Quincy Porter

From the Pulitzer webiste:

1954 -
Concerto For Two Pianos and Orchestra, by Quincy Porter

First performed by the Louisville Symphony Orchestra, March 17, 1954. This was one of the works commissioned under a grant of the Rockefeller Foundation for new American compositions for orchestra, or soloists and orchestra.

Oh dear...how about a hint, Andrei?
No need for that.... That's a young Friedrich Nietzsche...I recognize the picture from a cover of his early writings...of course, he did compose, but was he a composer?  ::)

He composed and his music has been recorded. I'd say he qualifies.

Well, it's Rafael's turn now I suppose.

Yes, I supopose it is my turn...

Who is this adorable yet melancholic boy?

He's been much debated here on GMG (as is fitting)...

Too vague a hint but judging by the architecture, I'd say the location is Central / Eastern Europe. Polish, maybe?

Is that Martinu?

I don't think so. The picture is more recent than the time of Martinu by that age, methinks. Plus, Martinu's skull was more elongated.

He was a composer...but he hasn't been much discussed in that capacity here on GMG. He's very controversial in his other capacity (and talked about relatively often here).

What I gather from this is that (1) he's dead, and (2) he was a conductor / performer.

As to (1), ja, er ist tot. As to (2), neither a conductor nor a performer, and yet, music is very central to his work.

Indeed...as much a composer (or even more so) than good old Friedrich... ;)

Then that background should be Frankfurt am Main, I suppose. But as to "relatively often discussed here" I disagree.
