Is it me, or is everyone carefully avoiding the 5th symphony's first movement ?  :o

Well, here goes:

Symphony no 3:I
Symphony no 5:I  :D
Quartet op 132:III, Heilige dankgesang
Missa solemnis: Agnus Dei
Sonata 32:II Arietta with variations.

I feel like everyone knows it so well that the shock, awe and excitement it evokes upon initial hearing wears off after a while...........

But it is amazing nevertheless.

I like this part:

But that's kinda it for me  8)

Why? That is probably the most predictable moment in the whole symphony.

Missa Solemnis Op.123 - IV. Sanctus & Benedictus
String Quartet No.10 Op.74 - II. Adagio ma non troppo
String Quartet No.14 Op.131 - VII. Allegro
Piano Sonata No.32 Op.111 - II. Arietta: Adagio molto semplice e cantabile
Piano Sonata No.18 Op.31 no.3 - II. Scherzo: Allegretto vivace

Arietta & 5 variations from Op. 111
Finale of Op. 131
Cavatina of Op. 130
Slow movement of Op. 106 (as long as you guys are talking about Beethoven's inability to write melodies....)
Sanctus & Benedictus of Op. 123

Plus extra special edition just for the scherzos:
Symphony 3
Symphony 9
Quartet Op. 127
Quartet Op. 135
Violin Sonata Op. 24
Piano Sonata Op. 31 no. 3

I guess I'm too consistent lol

I was told to only pick 5. I attempted to come up with 5, not to list every movement that impresses me.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

I just list whatever comes to the top of my head at any given moment. The Beethoven symphonies are pretty far from there when I think of my favourites among his work, mostly because I don't listen to them that often compared to other stuff. If it was top five movements in a Beethoven symphony it might be a different story.

(3/I, 7/IV, 9/II, 6/III, 8/IV. Ok maybe not. No individual movement of the 5th actually stands out to me, it's more the cumulative effect of all four...)

Marc

Random choices in random order. :)

Opus 47 ("Kreutzer" sonata, violin/piano) first movement
Opus 58 (piano concerto no 4) 2nd movement
Opus 90 (piano sonata 27) both movements
Opus 101 (piano sonata 28) first movement
Opus 109 (piano sonata 30)) movement 2 & 3

Oops, that's, from 5 pieces, 7 movements.

I like the kind of 'chord transfer' kind of stuff, or imitation. Particularly when it's dissonant (like Stravinsky, Messiaen and Xenakis sometimes do) or in Beethoven's case, slightly ambiguous. That's kind of the only reason. Plus it very vaguely, reminds me of a vertical version of one of Webern's late canons.....

But I'll reserve my disdain for the rest of the symphony  $:)

:D

Totally agree. One of the great mysteries in music is how Beethoven could follow 5:I with that dreadful II  ::)

Biffo

In no particular order: -

String Quartet No 15 in A minor, Op 132 - III Molto adagio 'Heiliger Dankgesang'
Symphony No 9 in D minor - III Adagio molto e cantabile
Symphony No 3 in E-flat major 'Eroica' - Marcia funebre: Adagio assai
Missa Solemnis: Sanctus & Benedictus
Piano Sonata No 32 in C minor, Op 111 - II - Arietta. Adagio molto semplice  e cantabile

All slow movements but that is the way it came out today. I could just as easily substitute the 1st movements of Symphonies No 3 and 9 and the first movement of String Quartet Op 131. Perhaps we should have two lists - fast and slow - and then I could include the 1st movement of Symphony No 8.
