I did enjoy it, yes. I enjoy Sørensen generally.

I found the whole Grawemeyer business kinda distracting. But then awards is a whole weird area.

Piece was nice, though.  :)

Another award I haven't one.

I was just wondering which piece would get this yesterday......

Now I know. So I'll be sure to have a listen tomorrow.

Well, there's always the next world!

If it is any consolation, (and it probably isn't  ;)  ) I think Melville sold about 300 or 400 copies of Moby Dick, and the reviewers savaged it.

In a way, I do find that a consolation.

A savage review is better than no review.

No such thing as bad publicity? $:)

Any reviews of this work? I got the point after about 5 minutes or so, but stuck with it.  There were certain things which I thought contained great potential for development, but those paths were not taken.  Instead, back to microtonal slides and "soundscaping."

I got the point... but....  There were certain things which I thought contained great potential for development, but those paths were not taken.  Instead, back to microtonal slides and "soundscaping."
But is "the point" of listening to music to "get a point"?

This isn't discursive prose, it's music, art music. There's no point to get. There are sounds to listen to and, possibly, enjoy. They occur--in a piece like this--in a certain order, so part of the pleasure comes from recognizing things, sometimes in quite different contexts from the first occurrence. That's not really "a point," though. Just a thing that happens.

But let's say, for the purpose of discussion, that a musical piece does have a point to make. In that case, I would say that perhaps its putative lack of development might be at the very least "a" point, if not "the" point. After all, Sørensen is a professional, established composer with a large body of work. That is, he's not a composition student learning techniques of development. He's already a master, fully capable of making sensible and satisfying musical decisions.

I listened to it with my girlfriend and we both thought it was a great piece with a rather serious tone. Highly enjoyable, of course, but out of everything I have heard composed in 2016 it wasn't really my favourite. If only I could choose which piece gets what award............. 8)

Really, that is as much as can be wished for a piece which is recognized with an award.
