She was already battling against cancer for quite a while. Still, the news of her passing came unexpected to me.

Yeah, artistically, I also prefer the combi with le méchant Serge to the latter with hubby Berger.
But, AFAIK, the relationship between Gainsbourg/Gall was, uhh, a delicate one, and, after some time, Gall didn't like it anymore.
