Btw, how are we dealing with the Soviet era? Are we allowed to include the likes of Lyatoshynsky and Khachaturian, which were technically part of the same country as Russia (namely the USSR) when they were active? If Weinberg is included, and he was Polish, then we can include the other Soviet countries.

Yes, they may be included.  I included Weinberg because most of his composing was accomplished in Russia.

I had wanted to include a Khachaturian symphony but I wasn't sure of the exclusions. Glad this was asked and answered, I am partial to him (and others) who could be considered 'fringe'.  :)

Great seeing you back, Sammy! Unfortunately, I won't participate in another one of these kinds of polls as they go on and on ad infinitum. I do realize my own polls are rather boring by comparison, but I suppose that's more of a reflection of myself than anything else. ;) ;D

Sammy games do not go on and on.  As I said earlier, a game just takes a few days once it starts.  Keep in mind that a game is not a poll.

Okay, then I won't be participating in this 'game' then. :)

Does this mean all of the 1900+ members who will not be participating in the game must register that fact here.

I can't wait 'till tomorrow so I can vote again. There are some major injustices going on here! Some of you guys are nuts! (Prokofiev 2, sheesh! Even Prokofiev hated it!) :)

André

Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony
Kancheli: symphony no 7

I don't think the latter has any chance to get many points  ;D

Just because the composer of it hated it does not mean we can't love it 8)

I hope it isn't too early for me to post again but now I am here I am just gonna state my love and adoration for the following two symphonies who have influenced my love for 20th century symphonic repertoire profoundly:

Stravinsky: Symphony of Psalms
Ustvolskaya: Symphony no. 2

Cato

One of the greatest symphonies by a Russian composer has not yet been mentioned!  ??? :o

Yeah, man I know what you mean. Sad to see no one has mentioned Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments yet. Hopefully it will get a mention soon.

Given that this is a game with limited participation, there really isn't any reason to expect that the outcomes will be in line with general consensus (whatever that might be).  Unusual results are quite common since they can only reflect the musical preferences of the participants.  I've run games where folks like EJ Moeran and Howard Hanson win the day.  Also, many of the games where the mighty Beethoven is included find him lucky to make it past half-time.  Yes, Virginia, there is a half-time adjustment where low-scoring works/composers bite the dust.

Sounds fun! Looking forward to seeing how this goes along. 8)

If Prokofiev had heard today's performances, he might not have thought about revising the work at all!
