Praise your favored composers all you want, and make sure you don't make negative comments about those composers who you don't appreciate.

I made no explicit criticism of Ives, merely noted that his music is not to my taste.

Sammy

There have been some doubts expressed about the innovative properties of Beethoven's music.  Although he might not have created a new musical structure, my readings tell me that he made many smaller innovations.  Put another way, a dollar bill is worth much more than 10 cents, but having 10 dimes gets you as much as a dollar bill.

Quote from: Mirror Image on April 02, 2018, 09:22:27 AMAs for Ives, he was one of those composers in my beginnings with classical music that I took to rather quickly...

That's my history too, starting with Lenny's Ives 2. Ives was one of the first classical composers I fell in love with. The Baron's negative feelings for the composer is something I can't understand. In fact, I can't understand why any American shouldn't worship the composer. He just radiates much that is positive about America.

Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

I listen about 1 time a year to Ives (or even less), but I gave him points in this poll, because IMHO he was an innovative composer. His unfinished Universe Symphony is the proof of that.

Hildegard von Bingen was very innovative, too... but she recently got sacked in this poll. ;)

He certainly does, Sarge. I do understand, however, that a listener may not like the music (or really anything I love for that matter), but even if you don't like the music itself, it doesn't mean that you can't personally admire the achievement. What I do not understand is how Scarpia can't look objectively at Ives' innovations and at least give him the thumbs up. This game/poll (whatever it is) doesn't necessarily mean you like the composers' music you voted for, it seems to me that it's goal is to narrow down who we all consider the most innovative not who we consider personal favorites. Coincidently, I happen to have voted, and will continue to vote, for Debussy and Ives. Them being favorites of mine, however, didn't really factor in my decision making.

Very well put, John. And that's why I'm not playing in this game: to exclude Wagner (like him or not, that's irrelevant) from a list of the most innovative composers doesn't make much sense to me... ;)

Sammy

In these games, I concentrate on how I am going to vote and maximize my influence on game outcomes.  I don't concern myself with how or why others vote differently; that would be a waste of my time.  Also, it's none of my business.

Thanks, Rafael. I could be mistaken, but Wagner could be included in the next round of composers. Is this right, Sammy?

I don't know how many times I have to keep repeating that we have two rounds with Wagner coming in round two because of his last name beginning with W.

Of course it's right.  It is frustrating that some folks here don't seem to read what I write.  I run these games, control them, set the parameters and sequencing, tell everyone what's going on and what's coming up.  If you don't pay attention, you won't have the inside information.

We must be getting close to GMG down-time.  I sure hope that when the site comes back, nothing has been lost.  If threads do get lost, I won't be starting the same two games again.  I'll just move on to new games with different content.

No need to get too frustrated, Sammy. ;) It's not worth the trouble.
