I am a big fan of Haydn but unfortunately I haven't listened to his music yet this year! I am certainly not part of the ABH crowd....... :P

Well, I could be wrong but some ironic posts...here and there...in this thread but also in the WAYLTN thread re. Adámek's SQ. Never seen them before here.
My feeling is that contemporary/avangarde music is somehow "tolerated" by the great majority of posters in GMG until certain thresholds are not crossed over, such as "rating" avangarde pieces in direct comparison with "traditional" ones.
But as I said, I could (and hope to) be wrong.

Well, I've been here 15 years now, and IMO, contemporary music is more 'tolerated' than ever before. There has always been a dichotomy between traditional and avant-garde, not violent like I've seen in other places, just a division of tastes. Now, we have more people who claim to enjoy both! Imagine that! :)

To your point, I like the hell out of Shostakovich and Ernest Bloch, to name two people who were writing in my lifetime (not avant-garde, I know, but just an example), but when forced to make a direct comparison with Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, I have to go with the latter. It is the point of the game, to force you to make choices. I don't prefer Haydn because he makes me comfortable somehow, but because I really do like his music. The quartet on offer here, Op 77 #1 had a mate in F major and in 1799 when they were released, it was a stunner for the crowd. Just saying, everything is relative. I have no problem getting out of the here and now. Not least as self-defense. :)
