Oh, but ou put too much pressure on me, John. Elegantly? Gosh, wish I wrote this way.

Do they really? I think there are at least 10 composers we both greatly enjoy....

I suppose we do have more in common than I thought! Yeah, I'm sure we do admire some of the same composers. I guess I missed those posts. ;) :)

Huh?

I was a devoted Poe fan in high school but I really don't get this.  ???

Edit: Oh, do you mean C. Auguste Dupin:laugh:
I mean your avatar. Is it Poe?

If you're tired of the games, don't participate. Some of them interest me and I participate, others don't, and I don't participate in those. There are other activities on the board, such as "one word posts" which don't interest me at all, so I don't participate.

Why would I be "tired" of other people doing something they enjoy even if I don't enjoy it?

Nope. I did want to present it but I couldn't find the corresponding thread. Anyway, it was drawed 2 years after Poe died --- and it's a self portrait. Could you guess it, I wonder? (no google image search, please.) Hint: my nationality.

Well, I like them 1000X more than the One (or Two, Three, Four, Five or Several) Word (or Letter or Paragraph) threads. I also like them better than the totally subjective 'who are your Top 17 Kazoo Composers?' threads. I have resolved those issues for myself by not going to any of those threads once I am sure they haven't caused a fight or are talking about me behind my back. ::) Sometimes you just have to let it go... :)

8)

Me too, 110%.

Voting for the works is more interesting for three reasons, imo: 1) it results in a more objective list and 2) the game aspect is entertaining, and finally 3) over the course of the game, seeing the same list each day, I end up listening to a few unfamiliar works and have found several I like.

Oh, don't misunderstand me, I have no problems with people doing what that want and if they enjoy it, then more power to them. My point was more or less a complaint that there's too many of these types of threads and it seemed, to me, that they have become more of a distraction from musical discussion than anything. Also, I am human and I do get tired of things, but I'm certainly not wrong I believe in wanting to express this opinion as, to me, these kinds of polls have been something that's gotten out-of-hand in the past few weeks.

I haven't voted.

(Just saying.)

Oh, I didn't really expect any member to vote really. I know this poll is ridiculous, and possibly even petty, of me, but I had to unburden myself.

arpeggio

I can understand how the polls can be meaningful for many members.  For me they are not.  Most of the time one can correctly guess what the results are going to be.  I have been surprised a few times.  I have chosen not to participate in most of them.

There was a gentleman in another forum who employed polls to bolster his animas toward contemporary music.  He thought people should not waste their time listening to it.

This seems contradictory, you have no problem with people doing what they enjoy, but it's gotten out of hand. People are enjoying themselves too much?

I don't see any downside to the games. If it motivates people to come back every day to check in on a game they are participating in, that just brings them here and creates not chances for discussion. I've also seen examples of works brought up in games turning up in the 'what are you listening to' thread. I certainly have been made aware of new works when they have been nominated in one of the poles.

So I'm not allowed to complain about it? I already said this thread I created is ridiculous, but, at least, I'm honest about it being ridiculous, which is more than I can say for some members. :)

Aman. Second choice Lecca. The style doesn't match the Lecca paintings I see on the web though.

The sig is easy, it's a translation of a famous limerick by Byron. He was challenged to end. Poem "Timbuktu".

I am not going to specifically address any of the complaints lodged in this thread; most are either silly, inaccurate or intrusive.

What matters to me is game participation rates.  As long as I consider them decent or better, I will continue running games here.  If and when I find them insufficient, I'll pack up my bags and move on.

Aman.

See? Piece of cake.  :)

Seriously: did you know him beforehand or did you learn about him today?

I know the person you are referring to.  He had an agenda that had nothing to do with games or polls.  My sole agenda is to run games that have a viable participation.  In that role, I am neutral concerning the various genres and styles.

+1 .

I didn't find new works I liked, but I found a few rather interesting, which helps understand why others may champion them. Plus, the game is good fun. The 'one word' threads I find silly, but I never read them, so no harm done.  :D

bhodges

Though I am not able to contribute much to the game threads right now (or the forum in general) I think they are a welcome diversion, and obviously popular.

This board is enormous, and unless one has the time to browse and comment all day, there's no way you can absorb everything that's here. My two cents: best to participate in threads you like, observe replies in a few others, and bid a friendly "godspeed" to the rest.

For a short while I perused the boards at Classical Talk. I stopped that when the proliferation of these games seemed to subsume almost the whole forum. When some of the CT members drifted over here I wondered how long it would be before they appeared.

I agree with Mandryka that these games should be confined to the Polling Station where those who want to participate can easily find them and the likes of me who has no interest can easily avoid them. I prefer discussion, not endless referendums.
Cheers
