The Greatest Recording Ever Made: 3rd Poll

Making polls of recordings by one composer has not worked well; it gets a wholly different flavor to it. Perhaps because the specialists and real lovers of that composer come out in force. Suddenly it was about Bruckner not "TGREM". (Not that that's not interesting... just not what I'm after in the grand attempt to find which a recording might be, on which GMG-members converge for "TRGEM".)

So I've taken recordings from a variety of composers and times to see which ones you might thing could be considered having TGREM-status.

Bit surprised at the lack of show of the Neville Marriner Four Seasons -- but I suppose that's because it is, by today's standards, a GREATLY IMPORTANT recording more than it is a GREAT performance.

Other than that we have two clear favorites that go forward back into the preliminary list.

Actually I am surprised the Kleiber is coming in second........of all people I kinda would have expected him to come out on top!

I only have a few of this set.  I'm going with the du Pre because of the Sea Pictures coupling that it always comes with, but I don't have any particular attachment to that recording of the concerto.  I think Baker's Sea Pictures is unlikely to be surpassed.

I think Mackerras's Janacek opera recordings were a great accomplishment but are individually overrated, but that's the story with a lot of "greatest" recordings.

I'm almost surprised you are surprised; I would have figured that the DuPres/Baker Elgar recording would have been as HUGE a deal in Australia as it was in England and subsequently in the US. I think in the same poll in Germany, it might not have made second place. But then I am constantly surprised in this exercise.

I don't actually know the history of that particular recording, but I've personally never been as fond of du Pre's recording of the cello concerto as other ones.

Although I don't know them all I have no problem voting for the magical Bartok PCs with Anda and Fricsay (a wonderful conductor) on DGG this time around.
