V S Naipaul has died. A terrific writer, and like Conrad, not a native speaker.

     I know him from the books Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey and Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions Among the Converted Peoples. His target was taken to be Muslims by some critics. He thought he was attacking the influence of a kind of imperialism, the Islamic fusion of religion and government, which he maintained was destructive.
